ON THE MOVE / THIS WEEK'S COACHING NEWS
For the second time in 12 months, an MK Dons managerial appointment has impacted National League club Gateshead. A year after Mike Williamson left Tyne and Wear for the Stadium MK, Rob Elliot (above) has departed England’s northeast to take over as Crawley Town manager. Eliot – who is joined at Crawley by assistant manager Louis Storey and first-team coach Anthony Sweeney – replaces Scott Lindsey, who last week succeeded Williamson as MK Dons head coach. Former Sunderland defender Ben Clark has stepped in as Gateshead interim manager, for his third spell in charge. After three years on the staff at Nottingham Forest, Steven Reid has confirmed his departure following a second stint as a first-team coach at the City Ground. Meanwhile, former Burnley midfielder Jack Cork has returned to the Clarets as a coach and occasional overage-player for the Under-21s. Swapping the San Siro for Carrow Road is Tony Roberts, as Norwich City’s new head of goalkeeping. A goalkeeper with QPR and Wales in his playing days, Roberts subsequently coached at Arsenal, with Chris Coleman’s Wales and under Aitor Karanka at Birmingham City, before his time in Serie A with AC Milan.
After nine and a half years in charge, Aliou Cissé’s tenure as Senegal coach has ended. Cissé (above) led his country to their first major trophy, with Africa Cup of Nations victory in 2022, and the country's football federation had wanted him to stay on. However, Senegal’s sports ministry – which pays the national team coach’s salary – opted not to renew his contract. Plenty of movement in Scotland, starting with St Johnstone, where Finn and former Motherwell player Simo Valakari has joined as head coach, from Latvian club Riga. Ayr United have confirmed that former Celtic and Everton winger Aiden McGeady has left his role as player/technical manager, by mutual agreement. Dundee United have appointed Scott Allison as academy director, departing his role as Nottingham Forest’s YDP head. And Stranraer have hired brothers Chris and Stevie Aitken, as manager and assistant, respectively. Former Celtic Women head coach Fran Alonso has parted ways with National Women’s Soccer League club Houston Dash. The Spaniard joined the Dash last December, but had been on leave of absence for the past three months. Assistant coach Ricky Clarke will continue as interim head coach for the remainder of the 2024 NWSL season.
