Cyber Security Month: What is Malware?

Technologists love acronyms and buzz words, Malware is one such word. What is Malware? Put simply, it is a Malicious software. Another word is an App – an Application Software. Why should these words interest you? Malware criminals love the mobile market because smart phones contain many apps which store personal information, financial details, and other valuable data.

 What are signs your phone has malware?  

Android:

  • Sudden appearance of pop-ups  
  • Puzzling increase in data usage  
  • Phone battery runs down quickly  
  • Wi-Fi and Internet connections turn themselves on  

iPhone or iPad:

Although uncommon due to Apple's inbuilt security, malware can infect:  

  • Jailbroken iPhone   
  • An Outdated iPhone  

Malware can target anyone; how can you protect yourself?  

  • Be wary of links - do not click on unverified links in emails, texts, and social media messages  
  • Avoid clicking on pop-up ads while browsing the internet  
  • Avoid opening email attachments from unknown senders  
  • Do not download software from untrustworthy websites or peer-to-peer file transfer networks  
  • Patch and update operating system, browsers, and plugins  
  • Delete and uninstall any apps you do not use anymore
