Cycling Through Time

Erick Cedeño, aka the Bicycle Nomad's Mission to Inspire Through History and Cycling

"Curiosity drives me. It fuels my insatiable desire to know what's beyond the next bend of the road, to discover what's there beyond the edges of the map. If it is my muscles that propel me forward physically, it is curiosity that propels me mentally." –Erick Cedeño aka Bicycle Nomad.

These words encapsulate the spirit of Erick Cedeño , a modern-day explorer whose passion for cycling, history, and social justice has led him to some of the most significant and inspiring journeys on two wheels. His recent interview on the Ride To Success podcast with Pedro Couto Lopes provided a profound insight into his motivations, experiences, and future aspirations.

Journeying Through History

Erick Cedeño's adventures are not just about physical endurance but also about connecting with historical narratives that have shaped the world. His travels along the Underground Railroad and the paths of the Buffalo Soldiers are testaments to his commitment to honoring the past. When asked what drives him to select these specific routes, Cedeño shared, "There's a deep sense of responsibility to acknowledge those who came before us. These routes are more than paths; they are stories of resilience, struggle, and freedom."

"We have the responsibility to not just enjoy the outdoors but to acknowledge those who inspired us and came before us.
You die twice, once when you physically die and a second time when no one speaks your name"

To ensure these journeys are both enriching and respectful, Cedeño immerses himself in meticulous historical research. He studies historical documents, gathers photographs, and connects with historians. His preparation is comprehensive, aiming to experience the routes as authentically as possible. For instance, when retracing the Buffalo Soldiers' 1897 expedition, Cedeño started his journey at the exact time and place as the soldiers did 125 years ago.

Cycling as a Lens on Freedom and Resilience

Following these historical paths has profoundly influenced Cedeño's understanding of freedom and resilience. "Cycling through these routes, you feel the echoes of the past," he says. "You grasp the immense courage and determination it took for people to travel these paths under such perilous conditions." This deep connection to history enriches Cedeño's journeys, turning each pedal stroke into a tribute to those who fought for freedom.

"If I share this story, maybe more people who look like me or maybe don't look like me will start riding their bikes , and maybe I will inspire the next generation of bike packers or maybe the next generation of historians."

Cedeño's passion for cycling is deeply intertwined with his commitment to inspire others, particularly the youth. Through his travels and the stories he shares, he encourages young people to explore and discover themselves through cycling. His message is clear: the bicycle is a tool for freedom, self-discovery, and empowerment. "I want young people to see that the world is vast and full of possibilities," he explains. "Cycling teaches you resilience, patience, and the importance of being in the moment."

The Bicycle Nomad Summer Camp

One of Cedeño's most ambitious projects is the Bicycle Nomad Summer Camp, aimed at children from underserved communities. Diversity and inclusivity are central to his mission, and he believes the cycling community has a long way to go in becoming more inclusive. "Cycling should be accessible to everyone," he asserts. "It's about breaking down barriers and creating opportunities for all."

Cedeño's focus on kids from underserved communities stems from his desire to show them that their world is larger than their immediate surroundings. The camp will provide these kids with the chance to experience the freedom and joy of cycling, along with learning about the rich history connected to the routes they will travel. "I hope they take away a sense of empowerment, a belief in their own strength and potential," Cedeño says.

"Once you follow your passion, you become the best version of yourself."

A Vision for the Future

Erick Cedeño's work is a powerful blend of adventure, history, and advocacy. Through Bicycle Nomad, he is not only preserving the past but also inspiring a future generation of cyclists and historians. His journeys remind us that the road to success is not just about reaching a destination but about the stories we collect and the lives we touch along the way. As he continues to explore new routes and share untold stories, Cedeño's impact on the cycling community and beyond is sure to grow, fueled by an unwavering curiosity and a deep sense of purpose.
