Dare to Diversify: Harnessing the Power of Your Range

Dare to Diversify: Harnessing the Power of Your Range

A few years ago, I was interviewing for a role that looked like it was designed for those with a linear career path. But my resume told a different story - a medley of varied experiences and skills gained across different industries and departments.

This is the story of countless individuals who possess a range that defies traditional expectations.

But how can you communicate these skills in a context where you don’t know if they’ll be appreciated?

As I sat in that room, I understood the significance of showcasing my range. During the interview, I shared anecdotes of how my diverse background helped me connect with people, adapt to fresh challenges, and bring a unique lens to problem-solving. Luckily, my story resonated with the interviewer. This confirmed by my gut feeling that I should embrace my range, despite the job description.

When should YOU strut your range?

That's a common question that's been asked to me.  I would ask myself these three key questions:

  • What is my social identity in its context (how you perceive myself and how others perceive you)
  • What are my responsibilities in this role/context?
  • What changes might I make in this context?

Each role comes with its unique set of expectations, some of which, the person who made the job posting might not even be aware of. Recognizing these can help you understand which parts of your range will be most valuable. For example, a role with a heavy focus on strategic planning may require you to draw upon analytical abilities, while a customer-facing role might benefit from interpersonal skills.
