The Dark Side of Tech

The Dark Side of Tech

There is a topic that, although it is known, people do not want to talk about it and it is the damage that technology is doing to all of us. I'm going to focus on a number of ways that I personally experiment more because the negative consequences are too many to list them all.

The Evils of social networks:

The social networks were not only made to be addictive, they also manage to reduce the self-esteem of people if they do not receive the same validation as the rest of their peers. There is a proportional relationship between the amount of use of social networks and depression. This incessant need to compare our lives with those of others is really damaging because we are all different and we are in different situations.

The Zombies of Technology:

The second harmful consequence of the technology is the addiction to screens, we spent more than 10 hours glued to screens. Don't get me wrong, I do too! We walk all day from Laptop screen to tablet from tablet to cellphone. Don't let your life pass you by because you needed to know what was going on in social networks or in the news. Learn to leave the screens aside and interact with humans, this would be good to all of us.

The stealing and spreading of you information:

Now more than ever, companies collect more information about us and know in everything we do, this is super dangerous because the information can sold or stolen, people can find out where you live, your ID, email and everything else you can Imagine. A reputation can be destroyed by data spreading. Keeping things discreetly is something of the past. It is necessary to be very careful with the information about us that is out there, to some extent one could say that we are slaves of our information.

The polarization of opinions:

Thanks to current algorithms, we only see what we want to see and we don't see the other side of the coin when we hear about a story. When you search for news, the Google algorithm selects the sources that you most commonly use and therefore you don't get to learn the other side of the story, your reality is different from the reality of another person who is on the opposite end of the argument, for that person their reality is different because that is all that get from Google. This has polarized people's opinions as if they lived in a parallel worlds where people stopped speaking and communicating and are instead in an echo camber of their own opinions.

Fake News:

This is one of the worst consequences of current technology, social networks spread false news as if it is a daily thing (particularly WhatsApp) where the forwards of videos and news of Panama and other countries are distorted and exaggerated. My position on this subject is that if the news does not come from a reliable source and is not corroborated by other reliable sources then it is Fake News.

Big Brother Society:

Thanks to social networks and the spreading of information, we now we live in a world where we are all watching each other. Either you want it or not, because if you make a mistake someone can quickly record you, film you or something like that and the whole society falls on you like the plague. This is something very dangerous for people. Some people have even committed suicide after their life has been affected by societal pressures through social networks.

There are many other bad consequences of technology but here list some very popular, try now not to fall into these traps, unchain yourself from technology, live your life, do not define yourself by social networks and above all, be careful with your personal information.

What is the moral, the path taken by modern technology is extremely disturbing.
