For Data Scientists by Data Scientists

The message I get most often on LinkedIn is “how do I get to be a great data scientist?” And at the end of my time as U.S. Chief Data Scientist, I posted on LinkedIn what questions you had for me and most were about the training for data scientists.

In response, LinkedIn worked with me to develop a course to answer all those questions that were posted and give insights about how I think about data science. The best part? It’s free for the community – LinkedIn agreed to put it outside the paywall to support the broader data science community.

We’re now back with a new series, but with a twist.

This time I’m interviewing data scientists and technologists who I’ve learned from and inspired me to the work that I do. I want you to hear directly from them what makes a great data scientist.

We’re releasing a new episode each month and in Season 1 you’ll get to meet

  • Roger Magoulas – coined the term big data, started the first major convening of data scientists, and was doing data science long before it was cool.
  • Ben Lorica – brought together the first communities of data scientists, one of the first to recognize that a major shift in AI was about to take place, and an advisor to some of the most notable data companies like Databricks.
  • danah boyd – one of the early pioneers in data science, well known author,  founding board member of Crisis Text Line, and founded Data & Society.
  • Monica Rogati – famous for her work on building LinkedIn’s core recommendation technology, seminal for her part in naming the field, and led the first major data science team at a wearable technology company.
  • Todd Park – former U.S. Chief Technology Officer where he led the healthcare.gov rescue and helped start the U.S. Digital Service, co-founder of AthenaHealth, Castlight, and Devoted Health.
  • Jonathan Goldman – founding board member of Khan Academy, invented the People You May Know product at LinkedIn, and helped kick off the data wave at LinkedIn.

Our goal is to create a repository of original stories and advice from leaders in data science/AI that is free and open to everyone. And to help current and future data scientists think about their career and work. This content is free, courtesy of LinkedIn, and I won’t be receiving any compensation.

I hope you’ll take a chance and listen to the inspiring stories from these incredible data scientists! Let me know what you think and who else you'd like to hear from!

Hello Patil, I saw your latest data report, and I think you must have put a lot of effort into it. Can we communicate more? I want to study seriously

DJ Patil, we are honored, excited, and delighted to be working with you on this series! Our hopes are to reach and engage the next generation of data scientists (even if they won't have that title) and inspire them to take us all to new places. #OnTheShouldersOfGiants
