Statue of Liberty Arrives in New York Harbor
When I was 15, I went via helicopter from Mercer County Airport in New Jersey to the Union Nations with Veronique, a girl about my age who was summering with us. As we circled so close to Lady Liberty's head that we could clearly see the visitors in her crown, I was awestruck by her presence and the detail in her face. I proudly thought about the significance of her meaning of freedom and friendship. Plus, how lucky I was to share this with my friend who happens to be from France.
"On this day in 1885, the dismantled Statue of Liberty, a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of America, arrives in New York Harbor after being shipped across the Atlantic Ocean in 350 individual pieces packed in more than 200 cases. The copper and iron statue, which was reassembled and dedicated the following year in a ceremony presided over by U.S. President Grover Cleveland, became known around the world as an enduring symbol of freedom and democracy." - Excerpt from This Day in History - History.com
