Davos 2024

Davos 2024

Davos is the original home of Goals House, with 2024 marking our 5th year of heading up the magic mountain to convene the world’s leading business and political leaders, NGOs, academics, activists, and entrepreneurs, under one roof.  Going into this year felt decidedly more subdued than in previous years. Hot off the heels of a long period of programming and negotiations at COP28, which happened just a few weeks before, as well as an increasingly unstable global geo-political landscape, there was a sense of trepidation (and perhaps some fatigue!) about just how effective Davos could be in tackling some of the biggest issues we’ve faced in my/our lifetimes.

However, there really is nothing like the community we have built of organisations and individuals from different geographies, industries, and experiences. Hearing about the incredible work that is happening, collaboratively across sectors, as well as in their respective fields, reminds us why we keep returning, and importantly keep reviving our optimism about how we can improve the state of the world, in the face of increasing challenges.

From demonstrating the best of new public-private partnerships, to innovative new solutions, whether that’s via new climate technology or the development and deployment of AI, there is a lot of brilliant work happening to accelerate change, and for us to be positive about going into 2024. A huge thank you to everyone who participated!

Some personal highlights from the week include:

  • Launching our 2023 impact report, at a reception on the first evening of Davos, we brought together key members of our community, from our Advisory Board members, new and old friends, and partners. The report features some of the key thematic areas, from Gender, Climate, Technology and Health, that have resulted in partnerships and commitments from Goals House convening globally over the past year. • A great discussion around the state and preservation of global democracy as we approach the biggest election year in history, hosted by Roula Khalaf of the FT and featuring incredible advocates and activists Trisha Shetty, Adela Raz; Former Chancellor George Osborne and Mark Malloch-Brown. 2024 is the year where 40 countries will be holding elections, with close to 3 billion people going to polls that will affect 40% of the world’s GDP.
  • AI and its growing potential to transform the landscape of our lives, work, industries, and development, was definitely the topic of the week, present in every single discussion in some form. Our discussion with Salesforce, the UNFPA, Equal AI and the World Wide Web Foundation, provided an interesting insight into the role AI will play in achieving gender equality and reducing biases.
  • Hearing from the new CEO of the Washington Post, Will Lewis, about the pivotal role the media plays in protecting democracy, leadership and free speech, going into election year in the US.
  • Showcasing the convening power of public-private partnerships: Carmine Di Sibio, Global Chairman & CEO, EY, alongside Samantha Power, Administrator, United States Agency for International Development and Hein Schumacher, CEO, Unilever, hosted a high-level roundtable discussion inviting leaders to share valued insights at an interactive pre-launch of the CIRCLE Alliance on how to create successful partnerships and finding opportunities to collaborate. The CIRCLE Alliance (Catalysing Inclusive, Resilient, and Circular Local Economies), will be launched by Unilever, USAID and EY as a promising impact-led new collaboration to reduce plastics use, improve livelihoods, empower women, and protect the environment.
  • Other key sessions focused on topics including how data and AI can rewrite a better climate future; the role of business in today’s geo-political landscape, the declining health, safety, and wellbeing of women worldwide; the role of government and business in tackling Modern Slavery; how to shift to nature-centred economies that can prevent increasing nature loss; unlocking opportunity and alleviating challenges in carbon markets; and the investment opportunities in innovative marine technology and ocean energy.

Next stop on our Goals House 2024 agenda is the Munich Security Conference, please do get in touch if you’re planning to be there.
