Dealing with stress during difficult times

We can all agree that we find ourselves in the midst of a tough market situation, with the several layoffs happening more often than we would like to see, costs rising, business slowing down at times...  First things first, take a deep breath and remind yourself that you're not alone. Dealing with stress and fear in challenging times is something many of us go through. Even the most confident of us have down times. But fear not (pun intended), because I'm here to help you navigate these choppy waters and find some peace of mind. Let's do it together.

The reality is, stress and fear can really mess with our quality of life and balance. They can make us feel overwhelmed, anxious, and unsure about the future. Fear is not always rational and even in controlled and normal situations, our minds can build up to ridiculously difficult scenarios, which is even worse than the truth itself. However, it's important to remember that we have the power to take control of our mindset (or at least try to) and develop strategies to cope with these emotions effectively. So, let's dive in and explore some practical exercises and examples that can help improve your overall well-being in the face of this difficult market situation.

Be kind to yourself

I can’t stress enough (pun intended again) how important it is to be kind to yourself, especially when things are dire. Treat yourself with the same compassion and understanding that you would offer to a dear friend. Embrace your imperfections and acknowledge that you're doing the best you can. Take time for self-care, whether it's indulging in a relaxing bath, practicing a hobby you love, or simply giving yourself permission to rest. Be mindful of your self-talk and replace self-criticism with self-compassion. Remember, you are deserving of love, care, and kindness, so nurture yourself and prioritize your well-being.

This is an important lesson, but hard to learn. We are commonly our worst enemies, even more when the situation is frustrating. With kindness in focus, let’s see what other actions can help keep our peace of mind.

Practice Mindfulness:

Mindfulness is a powerful tool that can help calm your mind and reduce stress levels. It involves being fully present in the moment, without judgment. You can start by setting aside a few minutes each day to sit quietly, focusing on your breath, and observing your thoughts without getting caught up in them. Gradually increase the duration as you become more comfortable. Mindfulness exercises like this can help train your brain to let go of worries and anxieties, allowing you to approach challenges with a clearer perspective.

Find a quiet and comfortable place to sit. Close your eyes or softly gaze downward. Take a few deep breaths, inhaling slowly through your nose and exhaling through your mouth. Shift your attention to your breath, feeling the sensation of the air entering and leaving your body. Notice the rise and fall of your abdomen or the coolness of the breath at your nostrils. As thoughts arise, gently acknowledge them without judgment and let them go, bringing your focus back to the breath. Engage your senses and fully experience each inhale and exhale, grounding yourself in the present moment. Practice this for a few minutes, gradually increasing the duration as you become more comfortable. Remember, the goal is to cultivate awareness and let go of distractions, allowing yourself to find calm and clarity.

Embrace Physical Activity:

Engaging in regular exercise not only benefits your physical health but also has a profound impact on your mental well-being. Exercise releases endorphins, which are natural mood-boosters. Whether it's going for a run, practicing yoga, dancing, or even taking a brisk walk, find an activity that you enjoy and make it a part of your routine. Physical activity not only helps reduce stress but also provides a distraction from worries, increases your energy levels, and improves your overall outlook on life.

Combining exercises with listening to your favourite music can be an extra mood booster. I personally realised that my brain resets well during a brisk walk, breathing fresh air, enjoying nice music. So I leave it as a tip.

Limit News Consumption:

In today's hyperconnected world, news and information can be overwhelming, especially when it constantly bombards us with negativity. While it's important to stay informed, it's equally crucial to set boundaries. Constant exposure to distressing news can amplify fear and anxiety. Consider establishing specific times to check the news, and focus on reliable sources. Balance this with activities that bring you joy and allow you to disconnect from the market stress, such as spending time with loved ones, reading a book, or pursuing a hobby.

Seek Support:

Remember, you don't have to go through tough times alone. Reach out to friends, family, or support groups to share your concerns and fears. Talking about your worries can provide a fresh perspective, offer comfort, and remind you that others are facing similar challenges. In addition to personal connections, consider seeking professional help from a therapist or counsellor who can provide guidance and equip you with coping strategies tailored to your situation.

Practice Gratitude:

When things get tough, it's easy to focus on what's going wrong and fall into the darkest pits of our minds. However, cultivating a practice of gratitude can help shift your mindset towards the positive aspects of your life. Each day, take a few moments to reflect on what you are grateful for, whether it's the support of loved ones, a sunny day, or even the opportunity to learn and grow amidst the challenges. This exercise can help you cultivate resilience and find silver linings, even in difficult times.

Set Realistic Goals:

In the face of a difficult market situation, it's natural to feel overwhelmed by uncertainty. Break down your larger goals into smaller, actionable steps that you can work on consistently. Celebrate small wins along the way, as they will keep you motivated and boost your confidence. Remember that setbacks are a part of life, and it's okay to reassess and adjust your goals as needed. By focusing on what you can control and taking small steps forward, you'll regain a sense of empowerment and reduce anxiety about the unknown.

While these are just a few examples and exercises, I hope they serve as a starting point for you to improve your quality of life in the face of stress and fear. Remember, it's important to be patient with yourself and give yourself the space to process your emotions. We are only humans, after all. The road might not always be smooth, but by incorporating these practices into your life, you'll be better equipped to handle whatever challenges come your way. Stay positive, stay resilient, and keep moving forward! And always be kind to yourself.

I have my "be kind to yourself" reminder hint form - the placeholder in my schedule from 6pm where no new meetings or calls are allowed. It also has a tag "please, get some rest". Doesn't work 100% tbh, but works great as a reminder
