Dear Future Governor,
Could you help a school in need? Not with money, but with time. Time to help shape the vision and ethos of a school, time to help monitor that money is well spent, and time to support school leaders.
My name is Hannah Stolton, CEO at Governors for Schools. We’re an education charity that finds and matches volunteers with vacancies on school governing boards. Governors are vital for the effective running of a school, and schools, now more than ever, need you.
Although school governors represent one of the largest volunteer forces in England and Wales, public knowledge of governors is not as high as we would hope. Over the last 20 years, we’ve worked to place thousands of volunteers on boards, but there is much more to do. Did you know there are thousands of governor vacancies across England and Wales? That’s right - thousands. For this reason, I write to tell you a little bit more about governance in the hope you will consider this vital volunteering opportunity.
We live in a diverse society, and schools need governors who bring different experiences and perspectives to help them face contemporary challenges. You don’t have to be a parent, an experienced education professional, or a degree holder. In fact, most people over the age of 18 can become a governor. You’ll need enthusiasm for the role, as well as the necessary availability (our surveys suggest around seven hours a month) and we’ll work with you to match you with the right opportunity.
So, could you take a seat on a school board? We would be delighted to help you on your journey. This National Schools Governors’ Awareness Day, 28th February, I invite you to join us at 2pm for our free webinar outlining this important role and how Governors for Schools can help you share your skills with a school in need
The team and I are ready to help you take up this rewarding opportunity.
