Dear Recruiter

Dear Recruiter

Hello! Last time, I was filled with ideas from IHR London Live. This week, I'm equally energized by IHR - In-house Recruitment Leaders Manchester. I already posted a roundup of some key themes, but I wanted to take a moment here to share a roundtable conversation.

One attendee spoke of the three-year journey he has been on. He took a company with no TA function where 87% of new hires came from agencies—and grafted, building trust and credibility with hiring managers.

He had to overcome an ingrained culture of leaping straight to agencies to fill roles. Crucial to this culture shift was action over talk. He told us how, for example, he took a role open for 368 days and said, “Look—it’s not worked so far with agencies. Give me a chance, and I will fill your role in 60 days.” And that’s what he did.

The result? Through consistent action and engagement, the company now has an 8-person TA team, and only 1.82% of recruitment comes via agencies. (He was keen to emphasize those decimal places. And why not—it’s a result worth being proud of!)

📈 Data Point: McKinsey’s future of the workforce prediction

Data and insights the Pinpoint team heard at IHR Leaders Manchester

We picked this McKinsey stat up from Robert Newry talk at IHR Leaders Manchester (thanks Robert). What stands out is the predicted rise in the need for social and emotional skills in the coming years.

This statistic helps explain why Robert also got us all standing up to play the classic schoolyard game of rock, paper, scissors.

Yes, you read that right! He did that because he wanted to show (not tell) how much more we can learn about people when we ask them to do something rather than ask how they might do something. And how much richer that information is.

It was a fascinating prompt to think about what we ask in interviews and what we’re doing with that information.

🎙️ Talent Talks - with Rob Green

Quick fire questions to get to know leading recruiters

We've got some new episodes in the pipeline for Talent Talks—in the meantime, I wanted to highlight this snippet from last week's conversation with the brilliant Rob Green 🚀 from Rectec® .

I asked him for his advice to TA leaders as they contemplate their recruiting tech stack in today's environment, and he nailed it. The biggest mistake he sees recruiters making is they don't know what they need, or why.

Before you go shopping for a solution, get clear on exactly what you need. And not just the 10-15 basics. Go deep.

As Rob says, you don't know what you don't know—so make it your job to find out.

💡 Tips from TAs - Use data to target hiring manager training

From the Pinpoint team and our customers

I wanted to call out a customer story I mentioned in my talk at IHR Leaders Manchester. Instant Impact , an RPO, integrates Metaview into Pinpoint. At a top level, it helps hiring managers focus their attention on candidates during interviews by automatically taking notes.

But Cam Skinner, Head of Internal Talent, has taken it a step further. He uses Metaview's analytics about specific interviews to help him target his hiring manager training.

He will do spot checks to make sure interviews are similar lengths, include similar questions, or to check if there are any double-barrelled questions. He can then use this to support hiring managers and ensure the candidate experience is as consistent and engaging as possible.

You can read more about Instant Impact’s approach to reporting in its hiring here.

The recent events I've attended have all highlighted how creative, strategic, and innovative the TA community is. I’ve had many great conversations and listened to many insightful industry leaders. And it’s not over yet!

Up next is IHR Bristol on 7 November, and we cannot wait to see more of you there. We’ll be at stand #20, and you can still register (for free!)

As always, any insights or feedback you want to share, email me at dear.recruiter@pinpointhq.com
