Deck the halls with HR tips, festive cheer and policy documents...
My last newsletter of 2024 is a big one - so keep scrolling or you might miss something exciting!
As we wind down for the festive season, I’ve been reflecting on what a whirlwind of a year it’s been. There’s been plenty of change and not all of it has been easy for businesses to navigate!
The recent Autumn Budget with tax hikes and a rise in employers’ national insurance contributions coming next year, there’s no denying it’s a tough pill to swallow. I feel like business confidence is down and many are bracing themselves for a bumpy ride ahead.
On top of that, we’ve seen an increase in big names being accused of sexual harassment, shining a light on the urgent need for workplaces to be safe and respectful. This year’s new legislation means employers now have a legal duty to take proactive steps to prevent sexual harassment. This isn’t what some are branding woke nonsense, it’s about creating workplaces where people feel valued and protected.
Now in light of all this doom and gloom and chaos, I know it’s tempting to let things like culture slip down the list when times are tough. But honestly, this is when they matter most. A strong culture doesn’t just protect your people, it protects your business too - more than any other strategies! (Culture eats strategy for breakfast you know!)
So as we head into the festive break, let’s take a moment to think about the kind of workplaces we want to create in 2025. It’s been a challenging year but I firmly believe there’s an opportunity here to make positive changes that will benefit everyone.
Here’s to a festive season filled with rest, fun, cake and maybe a little bit of planning for a brighter, more compassionate new year.
Cheers to you all!
Reflect, regroup and prepare for 2025
As we close out 2024, it’s the perfect time to reflect, regroup and set your business up for success in 2025. If you’ve got a team relying on you, your plans need to go beyond profit and growth targets - they need to focus on your people too.
Here are some key areas to consider as you gear up for the year ahead:
Be Ready for Economic Challenges
With the recent Autumn Budget adding pressure through increased taxes and employer costs, 2025 could be a year of tight margins for many businesses. Now's the time to:
Review your finances: Are you making the most of every resource? Look at where you can optimise without cutting corners on staff engagement or wellbeing.
Plan for flexibility: Economic uncertainty means you may need to pivot quickly. Build contingency plans into your strategy.
Focus on Culture as a Strategic Priority
In times of uncertainty, culture becomes your anchor. If your team feels supported and valued they’ll pull together to weather any storm.
Define your 2025 culture goals: What do you want your workplace to feel like by the end of the year? Think about trust, collaboration, and respect.
Invest in your leaders: Equip your managers with the skills they need to lead with empathy, clarity, and confidence.
Communicate expectations: Be clear about what behaviours and values you expect from your team and model them yourself.
Prepare for New Legislation
The Worker Protection (Amendment of Equality Act 2010) Act 2023 came into force in October requiring employers to take proactive steps to prevent sexual harassment in the workplace. If you haven’t already started, now is the time to:
Review your policies: Do they cover the new legal requirements?
Provide training: Make sure your team understands what constitutes harassment and how to report concerns.
Conduct risk assessments: Identify any situations or behaviours that could lead to harassment and address them proactively.
Rethink Employee Engagement
With so much change and uncertainty, keeping your team engaged will be key to your success in 2025. Focus on:
Listening to your staff: Regular check ins, surveys and honest conversations will help you understand what they need.
Offering flexibility: Hybrid and remote working options remain popular. If you can offer flexibility, it could give you a competitive edge in retaining top talent.
Celebrating wins: Take time to recognise your team’s contributions and achievements - it goes a long way in boosting morale.
Set Realistic Goals
Finally, I predict that 2025 is unlikely to be smooth sailing …that’s okay. The key is to set goals that are realistic but still stretch your team to achieve great things. Break them down into clear milestones and track your progress throughout the year.
In closing… 2025 will come with its fair share of challenges but with careful planning and a focus on your people, you can not only survive but thrive. As a business owner, your team is your greatest asset - invest in them, trust them and lead with purpose.
