An ‘AI Scientist’ Is Inventing and Running Its Own Experiments (WIRED)

AI is getting a promotion from chatbot to scientist. Researchers from the University of Oxford partnered with startup Sakana AI to develop its first-ever AI scientist at the University of British Columbia lab (UBC). Research papers produced by the AI scientist suggest a compelling concept in training LLMs: If AI programs can learn in an open-ended fashion, by inventing and exploring novel ideas, they might unlock capabilities that extend beyond anything humans have shown them.
