Deepfake Scams: What Parents and Guardians Need to Know to Protect Their Families

The Deepfake Scam in Action

Imagine receiving a frantic call from a loved one, their voice trembling with fear as they describe a harrowing situation. They claim to have been in a terrible accident and need you to send money immediately. The urgency in their tone is palpable, and the caller ID matches their number. However, something about the interaction feels off, and you decide to call them back directly. To your relief, your family member answers, completely unaware of the supposed emergency. But, who called you?? The answer is most likely that you were targeted by a deepfake scammer.

Have you heard of deepfake technology?

This rapidly advancing AI-powered tool is being increasingly used by scammers to impersonate family members and trick people into sending money or revealing sensitive information. As a parent and guardian, it's crucial to understand how deepfakes work and what you can do to safeguard your loved ones.

What This Means for Your Family

Deepfake scams targeting families can have devastating consequences, including financial losses, identity theft, and emotional distress. Scammers often target elderly people and parents for money. Children are often targets of deepfake sexual abuse materials or sextortion. Sextortion is the practice of extorting money or sexual favours from someone by threatening to reveal real or fake evidence of their sexual activity. By staying informed about these threats and implementing safety measures, you can protect your loved ones from falling victim to these sophisticated scams.

What is Deepfake?

Deepfake technology uses artificial intelligence to create highly realistic images, fake videos, and audio recordings. Scammers can use this to impersonate the voice and appearance of a family member, making their scams much more convincing. Experts warn that scammers only need as little as 3 seconds of a person's voice or a few facial images to generate a deepfake that can fool even close relatives. Research from SafeWise.com has shown that 7 in 10 people cannot tell the difference between an AI voice clone and a real person.

This video shows an example of deepfake. The person and the voice in the video is not human. It is not the actor Morgen Freeman. It is created by an AI and spoken by a digital copy of Morgan Freeman (these are referred to as digital humans).

According to research from the University of California, deepfake voice technology can be created from just 3 seconds of audio. Similarly, scammers can create a convincing deepfake video using as little as 8 seconds of a person's facial footage.

Deepfake Scam Glossary

  1. Deepfakes: AI-generated fake videos and audio that appear realistic.
  2. Voice Theft: Scammers use deepfake technology to impersonate someone's voice.
  3. Video Impersonation: Scammers create fake videos of family members to make their scams more convincing.
  4. Family Emergency Scams: Scammers research details about a family online, then call or video call family members while pretending to be a relative in danger to extort money.
  5. Social Media: Scammers very often use social media to gather images and information about families to make their scams more convincing. Be very careful about putting personal information on social media.

Protecting Your Family

As deepfake scams targeting families become more prevalent, it's crucial for parents and guardians to take proactive measures to safeguard their loved ones:

  1. Establish a Family Safety Word: Agree on a secret word known only to family members. If someone calls or video calls claiming to be a relative but doesn't know the word, it's likely a scam. Do not share the safe word digitally (by text or email).
  2. Verify Identity: Ask questions only the real person would know the answer to before providing any information or taking action. Look for inconsistencies in facial expressions, mannerisms, or speech patterns.
  3. Don't Send Money: Never send money to someone claiming to be a family member based on a single call or video call. Verify their identity through other means first. Contact a family member or friend to dicuss before sending any money.
  4. Monitor Online Activity: Be cautious about sharing personal details online that scammers could use to impersonate family members.
  5. Stay Vigilant: Be wary of unusual vocal inflections, facial expressions, or movements that don't match the real person. If something seems off, don't provide sensitive information.

By understanding the risks of deepfake scams and taking proactive steps to protect your family, you can help prevent these sophisticated scams from succeeding. Stay informed, establish safety measures, and trust your instincts to keep your loved ones safe.
