It is in the spirit of my work I call Deliver, and this blog as its namesake. In Deliver for April 2020, I offered up on the combination of Commitment and Compassion. We need both in these times and going forward. I suggest the read. And, in that spirit, and extending on it, let me add another "C".
In these times, we can find ways to have fun. We can find joy in our animal friends. We can set our sights on personal goals (see my jacket and intent to wear it).
These are all important.
We can recognize the need to grieve too.
Important. All.
Now, consider Candor as you walk both committed and compassionate.
In the video referenced above, I speak to the importance of Integrity and Dominion. In owning who we are, it is important to reflect with ourselves (and with absolute Candor) in order to best determine our true Commitment and Compassion. To sustain our energy, we need to focus both. I cannot get sincerely committed and wholly compassionate until and unless I speak with myself with great Candor. No BS. No "good intentions". I must get real. Such will strengthen my own sense of Integrity and Dominion.
Let me expand on this.
I believe in our Humanity. Humanity is our highest standard. Inhumanity, our lowest. I believe in our capacity to learn and grow. Regarding these times and their challenges I am learning, and growing. I am considering some expectations for duration, and some thoughts around the changes underway. I am considering the confusion around these days... and becoming aware of the "theories" of conspiracy abounding. I am considering the necessary responses... and more.
Yes, I am considering projections for these days... and the science of what we know and don't know. I continue to consider 5 sites I have followed in my own now 59 days of self isolation. I am considering these days and times in which we find ourselves. I am doing so, with Candor.
Candor Primed
I write of this because delivering on both our message and service requires us to discern with Candor in order to find that to which we will truly commit our Compassion. It will ground our sense of Integrity and Dominion in ways that people will not mistake. Without it, we are prone to be a bobber on the ocean wholly moved by the waves and wind. With it, we find a powerful rudder and engine... and a course to chart.
With that in mind, in the video, I reference the acronym M.A.R.K.. To create and make your M.A.R.K. means that you identify:
- What MATTERS to you most in terms of a problem to solve or an issue to address in your work? What gives your work meaning? I used to say that what mattered to me in my work was the "fracture" in the world, locally and globally, identifying it as a core problem to be addressed. I still do, but now refer to the issue of UNITY. These words of Baha'u'llah ring powerfully true to me, "The well-being of mankind, its peace and security, are unattainable unless and until its unity is firmly established." For me, the work I most desire for life is to be building a powerful, practical and palpable Unity.
- How do you see yourself ADVANCING on the problem or issue? In other words, in broad strokes, how do you see yourself serving this cause? For me, it is my deep and broad work in character leadership and education over more than 30 years. It is my background in leadership training and development over 40 years, my 14 years of work in temperament, and my 18 years associated with The Virtues Project. It is my ever deepening 20 years of experience with The Ruhi Institute. It is my 12 years with Dale Carnegie Training across North America from 1987 through 2001. It is my years of experience in cartooning, dance and song too (all requiring a sense of for, unity and character), and more. What I bring to the table is my collective experience. For you, in considering how you address what matters most to you... ask yourself, "What is the sum total of relevant knowledge, skills, abilities and talents that I bring?"
- Who are your best RECIPIENTS in delivering your service? Who do you best serve? For me, I help world embracing, noble minded educators, entrepreneurs and emerging leaders; those educators, entrepreneurs and emerging leaders (young and not) who want to make a lasting difference in bettering the world.
- How do you KINDLE the fire of Service? In other words, what platforms and products do you offer? For me, keynotes, breakouts, seminars, workshops, courses, programs, coaching, consulting, writing, blogging, vlogging, cartooning, singing, dancing and creating.
As I look at the world and understand the systemic changes that are now only truly beginning, and the lasting changes required and coming, I am resolute in the idea that my work and living increasingly is about:
- building powerful, practical Unity at school, work, business and community
- advanced by the study and practice of character leadership and education
- in support of world embracing, noble minded educators, entrepreneurs and leaders
- through keynotes, breakouts, seminars, workshops, courses, programs, coaching, consulting, writing, blogging, vlogging, cartooning, singing, dancing and creating.
That is my M.A.R.K.. My thought to you this day is this. As we rise, while it is vital that you consider new skills and platforms and ideas going forward, your starting place is to take the time, with Candor, to set your M.A.R.K.. Once you have established it, your focused Commitment and Compassion are advanced, your sense of Integrity and Dominion is strengthened, and the answers to what platforms, products, services and ideas you need develop and deliver are made easier.
