Delivering the Vision: City of Winder Forms New Departments, Brings Public Works Back In-House July 1

With the recent adoption of the Fiscal Year 24 proposed budget, the City of Winder's Mayor and Council gave the go-ahead to form two new departments—Engineering and Communications—and bring Public Works back in-house.

The formation of the new departments comes as part of Council’s mission and delivers on their vision to better address the growing needs of the community.

On board since September 2022, City Engineer Gerard Brewer, P.E., will lead many initiatives, from transportation planning to upholding design and construction standards, that will improve the quality of life for the City's residents.  Brewer said, “By forming an engineering department, our team will work to expedite Council’s directives on the various infrastructure projects crucial for the City's future development.”

In tandem, the Communications Department will provide residents with timely and accurate information about services, news, and events. During the COVID-19 pandemic, City leaders acknowledged the need for better communication efforts to keep residents informed and involved.

“It’s our mission to ensure that the City's communication with its residents is clear, open, and transparent,” said Katie Strickland, who will serve as Communications Director.

In another significant move, Winder welcomes the Public Works Department back in-house.

Formally managed by service contract, Council’s decision to bring this function back in-house will ensure consistent, dedicated service to citizens.

Clint Cannon, who was recently named Public Works Director, said, "We are looking forward to providing a high level of service to the City of Winder with our new team.” City elected officials are confident that these upcoming operational enhancements will make significant contributions to the community's prosperity and quality of life.
