What Golf taught me about Demonetization

After a round of golf with friends recently when we sat down for a customary cup of tea to reflect on the game, weather, politics the discussion was completely hijacked by the hottest topic of 2016!! Demonetization. And as is visible all over the social media today people have taken extreme positions on it, may I add the camp favouring it, in spite of odds that they face seem to be dominating.

So when it came to me to take a stand, I used none other than my passion "Golf" to articulate how I felt about it. Here is how it goes.

When you hit a the small dimpled ball with a golf club, 2 things determine the outcome, First the Speed/Force at impact and 2nd the Swing & follow through. It is important to understand what impact these factors have in determining the output.

The Speed/Force at impact determines Distance.
The Swing/Follow through impacts Direction.

So what has this got to do with Demonetisation ? What our Bold Prime Minister has done by withdrawing the Rs. 500/1000 notes is stuck the ball hard!! The impact is very good and has the potential to go a long distance but what will determine whether this ball will be in a water body or in the fairway (on target) will be dependent upon the follow through of this initiative. The move necessarily needs to be followed up with lot of bold, tough measures which will determine success.

So I congratulate him for a good impact and pray for a firm follow through.

Well begun is half done!!!

Good analogy. A real life example always brings clarity.

Good article, Samant Sikka!

First, The bigger point is that it's a linear equation. Without Step01, there is no Step 02. Second, the benefits of Step01, need to fundamentally deliver an economy that is better than the current state of affairs. Third, if the impact is high but the follow through is poor, the ball still carries a fair/ base distance. That base distance needs to ensure a benefit to the golfer (atleast the fair way, no tree in front, Opportunity to easily reach the green, decent lie). The same applies here.
