Demystifying Digital Nomad Visas: Why You Need One in 2024

Demystifying Digital Nomad Visas: Why You Need One in 2024

Researching and applying for digital nomad visas is something that brings me joy…

NOT!!

If you're a nomad, or a ‘slomad’, like me, you'll understand the pain of having to sift through hundreds of sites, communities and chats to get a grasp of how you will be able to legally live in a certain country for an extended period.

The digital nomad lifestyle is booming, driven by the desire for flexibility, adventure, and a better work-life balance. And thankfully more countries are catching on and offering Digital Nomad Visas (DNVs). In the last six months alone, new DNVs have popped up in Italy, Thailand, Indonesia, South Africa, Japan, and Turkey.

Yet, misconceptions about these visas persist…

Myth #1: “I don’t need a digital nomad visa if I’m not staying for a year.”

Reality: Most tourist visas last only 60-90 days. A digital nomad visa not only extends your stay but also legalises it, avoiding the hassles and risks of visa runs. For instance, with a DNV for Spain, you can live there and travel around the Schengen Area without worrying about the 90-day rule.

Myth #2: “DNVs have high income requirements.”

Reality: Out of the 44 DNVs available, 35 have an income requirement. The average annual income requirement is US$39,405, with options ranging from US$15,300 (Ecuador) to US$93,000 (Iceland). Choose a destination with a lower cost of living if your income is on the lower end.

Myth #3: “DNVs require a lot of paperwork and take months to obtain.”

Reality: The application process isn’t as daunting as it seems. The key is finding reliable information and preparing the correct paperwork. Processing times vary but average around one month. Apply well in advance to avoid stress.

Additional Perks

DNVs offer more than just longer stays. Countries like Croatia provide tax breaks and other advantages, while long-term visas can unlock access to resident services like national health insurance. Some countries, like Spain and Portugal, even offer pathways to permanent residency and citizenship after a few years.

Digital nomad visas are becoming more accessible, providing a legal and convenient way to live and work abroad. They offer extended stays, compliance with local laws, and stability that visa runs can’t match.

If the process seems overwhelming, services like Wandra can help you navigate it smoothly, so you can focus on your work and adventure. Embrace the digital nomad lifestyle with confidence - your ideal visa can open up a world of possibilities.

But before you can become a digital nomad… You'll need a remote job, right? 😉

Great information. Since I've been out of the loop a while and wasn't aware of this. Really had not thought about it when I tell ppl one day I'm going to live somewhere by the water and where things are more relaxing yet still have fun...🫠 thanks for the share now about those remote jobs 🤔
