Dense Storage Enables More Responsive Content Delivery Networks

When thinking about Content Delivery Networks (CDNs), it’s easy to go straight to the big brands we know, like Netflix, Hulu, etc. That makes sense; it’s intuitive to think about the latest episode of your favorite show being distributed to your phone or living room TV. Of course, it’s much more complicated than that, and high-capacity storage plays a major role in the customer experience. Read this report on Content Delivery and Dense Storage.

Lenovo ThinkSystem SR635: Revisiting the Workhorse Server

Three years ago, the Lenovo ThinkSystem SR635 was introduced into our StorageReview testing lab as a high-performing, feature-rich server equipped to handle a wide variety of tasks. With a robust build and packed specifications, the SR635 had an immediate impact, quickly becoming one of the cornerstones of our testing environment. We recently decided to revisit this reliable machine many years on to look at how it has held up as a mainstay of our lab over that time.

It's Deja Vu for the Lab and Lenovo ThinkSystem SR635.

In our recent “Ultimate Workstation” project we dropped an AMD 96-core Genoa-X CPU in a Tyan chassis. The included heatsink was relatively small and many of you worried about its ability to cool the chip. In our testing, we did see a few spots where thermal throttling took place. So we went to Dynatron to get a closed liquid loop to see if the cold plate and radiator would make any difference. At least now the CPU is the coolest thing in the box. Testing underway.

We just received this lovely 8U blade chassis in the lab from Supermicro. Expect many upcoming videos and a full review of the SBE-820H2 and the blades within. We’ve been seeded four GPU blades, complete with...ahem...NVIDIA H100 GPUs and a dual-proc compute blade. There is much more to come, until then, enjoy the unboxing, hardware inspection, and Jordan’s beard.

Lenovo has made a tremendous investment in full liquid cooling. We’ve been in their labs before and got hands-on with the Neptune severs which are entirely liquid-cooled, no fans. At Lenovo Tech World we saw the updated range of servers with support for Intel and AMD CPUs and a range of GPUs including 4x NVIDIA H100s.

We put together an article last week adding a 61.44TB enterprise SSD to a Steam Deck that absolutely went nuts. Here’s the short video showing it all coming together. This isn’t exactly fully supported or even encouraged, but it sure is fun!
