Dental Disease Doesn’t Fix Itself
Last year when I bought a new chainsaw, I thought it wise to get the full protection.
Helmet.
Face shield.
Earmuffs.
The owner of the power tools store who sold me the gear, or kit, said to me, with an inquisitive face:
“You wouldn’t believe it, but I get guys come in here and ask me if I have any cheap earmuffs…”
There really are some fools out there…
Because there are some things you really should never be choosing on price.
Would you….
If you were going to jump out of an aeroplane, would you buy the cheapest parachute you could?
If you were going to have brain surgery or heart surgery, would you choose the cheapest doctor for each or either?
What about car tyres for your family car?
Would you want the best and safest tyres?
Or would the cheapest set of tyres be OK for the vehicle transporting your wife and children?
And it’s the same with dental surgery…would you go to the cheapest dentist you could find?
Sadly, you know, some people do choose their dentist based on price.
These people often don’t care whether their teeth last a lifetime or not. They may only want their teeth to get by until the next disaster, or they may truly believe that all dentists are the same…
It’s scary…
It’s a pretty scary thought to think, that some people really don’t care whether their teeth last five more years or five more seconds…
And some people have the same attitude to their management and maintenance of their overall health, and their body health and of the health of their body parts too.
Our role is not to convince or to sell…
Our role is not to convince or to sell… but as health care professionals, our role needs to be to educate the population that not all choices of treatment are equal in terms of quality, and that second choice, or second best, may not be a balanced choice.
Our role is to educate our patients that daylight may be the second best choice, and that what is perceived by our patients and customers as being a second choice, may possibly be so inferior, that to choose that second choice option is reckless and stupid to do so.
Our role as a health care professional is to teach our customers and patients the consequences of poor choices…. of choosing second best [when it’s really not good enough], and the consequences of delaying necessary treatment [and thinking that things do not deteriorate with the passing of time].
Because it’s never Ok to wait and see…

If your wife’s car needed four new tyres and four new brake pads…
If your wife’s car needed four new tyres and four new brake pads, would you be happy with a recommendation of replacing one brake pad and one tyre now, and getting the others replaced over a three to six month time period?
And if that seems illogical to you, then why would a dentist suggest the same sort of “plans” for removing disease and illness form their patients’ mouths?
Because many dentists do present treatment plans in that manner….
Worn tyres and brake pads don’t fix themselves.
And dental disease doesn’t fix itself either…
So stop treatment planning dental treatment as if it does fix itself…
And start creating greater urgency and concern in the minds of your patients about the disease in their mouths, and the consequences of not fixing things now.
