Design Your Post-Service Career Action Plan, Part 2, Post-Service Company Finder

In February, we created a Professional Introduction and outlined a post-service career priority list. In March, we'll explore strategies for researching and approaching potential employers. If you haven't read the February series, go back and do that. Each newsletter takes less than three minutes to read.

Step 1: Determine Location/Type of Work

Consider the following factors when determining the location and type of work environment that best suits you:

  • Virtual, In-Person, or Hybrid: Decide whether you prefer remote work opportunities, traditional office settings, or a combination of both.
  • Virtual positions offer flexibility and accessibility, while in-person roles may provide a more collaborative environment.
  • Hybrid options offer a balance between remote and office-based work.

Step 2: Assess Organization Size and Global Reach

Evaluate the size of the organization and its global presence:

  • Size of Organization: Determine whether you thrive in large corporate structures with established hierarchies and extensive resources or prefer the agility and close-knit culture of smaller companies.
  • Large organizations may offer stability and opportunities for advancement, while smaller ones may provide more autonomy and a faster decision-making process.
  • Global or Local Focus: Consider whether you're drawn to companies with a global footprint or those primarily focused on local markets.
  • Global organizations offer exposure to diverse cultures and markets, while local companies may provide a deeper connection to your community and region-specific opportunities.

Step 3: Explore Industries

Explore different industries aligned with your interests and skills:

  • Identify Key Industries: Reflect on industries that align with your passions, expertise, and long-term career goals. Whether it's technology, healthcare, finance, manufacturing, or sustainability, choose industries that resonate with your values and offer opportunities for growth.
  • Research Trends and Opportunities: Stay informed about industry trends, emerging technologies, and market demands. Identify sectors experiencing growth and innovation, as these may present promising career prospects and opportunities for skill development.

By adhering to these three steps, you'll achieve clarity regarding the ideal work environment, organization size, global presence, and industry alignment that suit your post-service career desires. In our upcoming segment, we'll delve into effective strategies for researching and engaging potential employers within these defined parameters, empowering you to navigate the job market with assurance and purpose.

But also look at the State support & Benefits for The Family. If your LZ is close to a state border, living on the other side of the line may be better. In Wisconsin we mandate that every County have a Veterans Service Office, staffed by Accredited - Veterans Service Officers who attend training (state and/or national) every year and have an Ethics agreement to NOT charge for claims services, thereby having direct access to the VA claims network. There to assist you and your survivors with knowing and applying for all VA benefits. Our state WDVA has a 128 credit GI Bill, in addition to the federal one for veterans. If a veteran is VA rated 30% or greater single children up to 26 and spouse until 10 years after rating or 10 years after last child turns 18 can also receive the benefit. Also Property Tax re-imbursement for our 100%/IU veterans & Survivors. We are fighting to get it reduced to 70% pro-rated.

Great insights here. I would add that in the early go of self discovery a service member fully explore both options of small employer versus a large one. The more options you have in your front site aperture the better.
