Spotlight on Global Media & Editorial Independence
More funding [for the BBC World Service] MUST come with guarantees of editorial independence.
Our colleague, Prof. Martin Scott, recently gave evidence to the UK’s Foreign Affairs Committee as part of their inquiry into the future of the BBC World Service. In his testimony, he emphasised the critical need for guarantees of editorial independence alongside increased funding.
Award winning journalism
Luděk Stavinoha has been shortlisted for multiple awards recently, including the prestigious European Press Prize 2024 for which he received the Runner Up award. He was also a recent finalist for the European Parliament’s Daphne Curuana Galizia Prize for Journalism.
Drawing on his expertise in obtaining confidential documents through ‘freedom of information’ requests, Luděk’s collaborations with journalists around Europe have produced numerous investigations published in The Guardian, Le Monde, Der Spiegel, Balkan Insight, and other leading media outlets.
DEV researchers interviewed by the media about Band Aid 40
The BBC recently published an article marking the 40th anniversary of Do They Know It's Christmas?, reflecting on the impact and critiques of the iconic Band Aid song. The piece highlights Radi-Aid Research and includes interviews with David Girling and Martin Scott from DEV.

Call for Placement Providers
I am so grateful for this opportunity - it has been one of my best professional and personal development experiences in my life.
says our BA student Tsukine Teranishi who completed 8-week internship at Reach A Hand Uganda. Hands-on work experience is crucial for professional skills development and personal development of students.
Here at DEV, we offer longer-term (8-month+) and short-term (8-10 week) placement programmes for our undergraduates (both) and master's students (only short-term placements), as a credited part of their degree.
We would love to hear from you if you think your organisation might be interested in hosting one of our placement students and/or if you know any organisation that might be interested in. Please reach out to our colleague Dr. Sophie Bremner who is a placement director or email dev.general@uea.ac.uk.
