Developing the Efficiency Mindset for Designers

As Designers we like to get to the fun part of our jobs as quickly as possible: creating great design. We read the Brief, ideas pop into our heads, and we spring into action. But you can use this time, while you are creating, to come up with personal process efficiencies.

Let's use a simple example. You are creating an online ad and you want some logos for links to Instagram, Facebook, Pinterest, etc. You navigate to a folder from your last job, grab the Instagram and Facebook logos, and place them in the layout. The Pinterest logo isn't in that folder, and a quick search yields nothing on your computer. You do a Google search, find the logo, and place in the layout. You're a good designer, fast and capable, and yet even in this small task among many tasks, there is room for improvement.

There is an adage in creating personal process efficiencies:

“If you find yourself doing the same thing over and over again, there must be a better way of doing it”.

In our example, simply creating an Adobe InDesign library with all the social media platform icons will help automate this process.

You don't have to create all possible efficiencies every time you design. Adding a single process efficiency when you design will add up over time. Simply being aware of repeated tasks will open you up to the efficiency mindset.
