Developing Wonderful People

Developing Wonderful People

Every day of our working lives, the teams who work on digital services at DWP Digital make a difference to millions of people. Everyone who contributes to our goals as an organisation is directly involved in our core mission of making sure that people can access the help, advice, and financial support they need.

To achieve our mission, we need a skilled and diverse workforce, who put our users at the heart of everything they do. Apprenticeships, which give people ways to change career paths as well as supporting those at the start of their careers, are a key part of that.

We’re committed to supporting people who want to make a difference to society by learning new skills in digital and transformation and applying them to projects with real-world impact. We currently have 265 apprentices working across 23 different programmes, from Level 2 to postgraduate level. Our apprentices work in a variety of roles, including software engineering, DevOps, data analysis and project management.

Our apprenticeships help us nurture and grow new and existing talent and create meaningful change. We offer a place to learn and develop in an innovative and collaborative environment, allowing people to truly shape their careers.

Celebrating success

We are celebrating National Apprenticeship Week, shining a spotlight on our incredible apprentices through a range of events, awards and talks from our current cohort.

Tuesday 6: How do we support an apprentice in Digital Group?

We start with a plan but also know that things don’t always go to that plan, circumstances can change, and life can be complicated. So if you are interested in finding out what support is available for you as an apprentice join this session or ask to hear more about it after the event.

Wednesday 7: Sharing my Apprenticeship journey

Not sure if an apprenticeship is for you? In this session hear from the people who know - current apprentices and those who have completed an apprenticeship in Digital Group.

Thursday 8: What are T Levels?

T levels are an alternative to A Level, combining study with a 45 day work placement.  They are still relatively new so in this session we'll share how T Levels are becoming an established entry route for young people and the amazing successes we have seen from our recent cohort of T-Level students.

At DWP Digital, apprenticeships are real jobs with a structured development programme.

They allow people to develop and achieve their career goals, and they enable us to meet our business needs. They are a key way for people to grow and refresh knowledge whether someone is new or established in their role or profession.[PC1]  We connect with our apprentices from the most senior people in the team all the way through to our work coaches who make the most difference every day, working at DWP is a department wide role with the outcomes we want to get to at the centre.

DWP Digital apprentices get access to lots of learning and support in an inclusive environment, learning from subject matter experts and understanding the working culture, which, in DWP Digital is very collaborative, supportive, and welcoming and has diversity at its heart.

To keep up to date with these opportunities, subscribe to our newsletter.

Each year, National Apprenticeship Week reminds us to step back and see what we are achieving through our Digital Group apprenticeships.

We are sharing content on our external channels daily (Twitter, LinkedIn and Instagram) including blogs by our current apprentices, social media, in addition to content on our partner channels Makers and Manchester Digital.

#DigitalWithPurpose every single day, every single action.

We have brilliant apprentices and alumni and very committed colleagues supporting them. Our communities of practice and managers are vital to ensuring success and I am very proud of my team led by Sarah Barlow who work incredibly hard to set and drive the talent strategy in DWP Digital and make apprenticeships (and many development programmes) happen
