Development Priorities for Nigeria's Blue Economy: Open Letter to the Minister designate
Honourable Adegboyega Oyetola,
The Honourable Minister of Marine and Blue Economy,
Ministry of Marine and Blue Economy,
Abuja, Nigeria
Dear Minister Oyetola,
Subject: Development Priorities for Nigeria's Blue Economy
First, I want to congratulate you for becoming the first Minister of Marine and Blue Economy in Nigeria, and I hope this letter finds you in good health and high spirits.
I am writing to you as a concerned citizen of Nigeria who deeply believes in the potential of our nation's blue economy and its role in driving sustainable development, fostering economic growth, and ensuring environmental stewardship.
The blue economy, encompassing various sectors such as fisheries/ aquaculture, maritime transportation, renewable energy, #tourism, and marine biotechnology, and presents a unique opportunity for Nigeria to harness the vast resources and potential within its maritime domain, the Exclusive Economic Zone (#EEZ) and continental shelf. With our extensive coastline (approximately 853km) along the Gulf of Guinea and the Atlantic Ocean, we possess valuable asset that, if managed wisely, can contribute significantly to the well-being of our citizens and the advancement of our nation.
Considering this sir, I would like to share my thoughts and recommendations on the development priorities for Nigeria's blue economy:
1. Sustainable Fisheries Management: The #sustainability of our fisheries resources is paramount. Implementing effective fisheries management practices, including enforcing regulations, combating illegal fishing, and promoting responsible fishing techniques, will safeguard our marine ecosystems and ensure a stable source of income and food security for our coastal communities.
2. Sustainable Aquaculture Development: Currently in Nigeria, “fish farmers cannot breathe”, critical attention is needed for the growth and development of the #aquaculture industry. The following are few points to be urgently considered:
a. Government Support: Government policies, incentives, and investments play a pivotal role in fostering sustainable aquaculture growth. Funding research, offering financial assistance to farmers, and creating an enabling environment contribute to sector development.

b. Regulatory Framework: Developing and enforcing robust regulations ensures that aquaculture operations adhere to #sustainable practices. Regulatory agencies play a crucial role in monitoring environmental compliance, health standards, and overall industry #development.
c. Market Access and Trade: Sustainable aquaculture products can access international markets with stricter environmental and social standards. Meeting these standards enhances Nigeria's reputation as a responsible producer and improves export opportunities.
d. Public Awareness: Raising awareness about sustainable aquaculture among consumers, policymakers, and stakeholders fosters support for environmentally friendly practices and responsible consumption.
3. Maritime Infrastructure: Enhancing maritime infrastructure such as ports, shipyards, and transportation networks will facilitate trade, strengthen maritime security, and attract foreign investments. Collaborative partnerships between public and private sectors can expedite the development of these critical assets.
4. Renewable Energy from the #Ocean: Nigeria's blue economy should capitalize on the potential of offshore wind, tidal, and wave energy to diversify our energy mix and reduce dependency on fossil fuels. Investing in research and development, as well as incentivizing private sector participation, will drive innovation in this sector.
5. Eco-Tourism and Marine #Conservation: Promoting sustainable tourism that respects marine ecosystems and cultural heritage can create employment opportunities and raise awareness about the importance of conserving our oceans. Protected marine areas should be established to safeguard biodiversity and promote responsible tourism.
6. Research and Innovation: Encourage collaboration between academic institutions, research organizations, and the private sector to advance marine sciences, biotechnology, and sustainable resource management. Research-based policies will enhance decision-making and promote innovation in the blue economy.
7. Capacity Building and Skill Development: Invest in training and skill development programs to empower local communities and professionals with the knowledge and expertise needed to participate effectively in various blue economy sectors. This will foster economic growth and inclusivity.
8. International Collaboration: Strengthen partnerships with neighboring countries, regional bodies, and international organizations to share best practices, exchange knowledge, and address common challenges related to the blue economy.
As you lead the Ministry of Marine and #BlueEconomy, I kindly urge you to consider these priorities and champion their integration into Nigeria's development agenda. The potential benefits for our nation, both #economically and #environmentally, are immense. I am confident that, with your leadership and commitment, Nigeria can emerge as a shining example of responsible blue economy development.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I remain optimistic about the future of Nigeria's blue economy and look forward to witnessing its positive transformation under your guidance.
Yours sincerely,
Olalekan Paul Akande

1yTo foster inclusiveness and equitable participation or representation of capture fisheries, especially the small scale fisheries, the country needs a Fisheries Commission. I am also in support of a fisheries co-governance policy that would truly devolve powers to the fishing communities.
