Developmental delays and Autism

Developmental milestones are the collection of skills and behaviors that are normally achieved at each age of a growing child. The developmental milestones can be categorized into the following domains:

-        Physical development: It is the growth of a child’s body and associated movements involving gross and fine motor skills. These can be characterized by the activities done by the growing child like crawling, walking, running, etc. which fall under gross motor skills. Fine motor skills include the ability to hold objects and use them, for example, a pencil or a spoon.

-        Speech and communication development: It is the ability of the child to communicate initially through gestures and later through words and ultimately language.

-        Cognitive development: It is the ability of a child to take inputs from the environment and think, reason, and perform problem solving.

-        Social and emotional development: It is the ability to understand social cues and understand express emotions.

The Centre for Disease Control, USA has defined several milestones by the age of 3, which are:

- Physical development: Can put on clothes by themselves, can feed themselves using a fork or spoon, can do activities like stringing beads

- Communication development: Can say their name, can have conversations, can use and answer ‘wh’ questions of who, what and where, name daily objects and activities

- Cognitive development: Can draw shapes or objects, can avoid dangerous activities like touching a hot object on warning

- Social and emotional development: Calms down easily after an emotional upheaval, joins other children in play

Autism can be usually diagnosed by the age of 3. Some of the developmental delays shown by autistic children are:

-        Not responding to name calling by 9 months of age

-        Not showing facial expressions corresponding to happy, angry, or sad by 9 months of age

-        Not engaging in interactive games by 12 months of age

-        Using few or no physical gestures to communicate by 12 months of age

-        Not showing or sharing interests with caregivers by 15 months of age

-        Not looking at something when someone points by 18 months of age

-        Not noticing when others are sad by 24 months of age

-        Not engaging in pretend games by 30 months of age

-        Not understanding others’ emotions or do not express own emotions by 3 years of age

-        Not engaging in play that involves taking turns by 5 years of age
