Did you know that Entrepreneurs are particularly at risk of developing mental health challenges including anxiety, depression & others ?
A recent study from the University of San Francisco found that entrepreneurs are more likely to experience mental health problems than people who are employed. In fact, 72% of entrepreneurs participating in the study reported some mental health problem, the most common one being anxiety.
Here are some of the reasons why entrepreneurs and business owners are notoriously more prone to mental health challenges.
1. Stress (and lack of self-care to manage stress)
It is no secret that entrepreneurial life is stressful.
Entrepreneurs can get easily trapped in a "never-not-working" mentality, forgoing opportunities for leisure and connection and thinking about work even when not actually working (remember your last vacation and thinking of a business challenge from your beach lounge ? I did that a lot in the past …LOL).
Entrepreneurs are notoriously sleep-deprived, over-caffeinated and financially constrained – with little emphasis on self-care and adaptive coping strategies such as (healthy) exercise and leisure.
2. Uncertainty. So much uncertainty.
As humans, our brains are wired to look for certainty. The ability to envision the future and anticipate stability & security for ourselves and our loved ones, is an avenue to this experience of certainty – one less accessible to those who are running their own businesses. This makes entrepreneurs more susceptible to higher levels of anxiety and panic disorders.
3. Social isolation
Particularly in early stages – when working alone – entrepreneurship can be incredibly socially isolating, which can enhance risk of depression.
Even when they are not alone, entrepreneurs spend a disproportionately high amount of time ininteractions related to networking or sales, leaving them with no time for deeper conversations that provide real space for vulnerability and authentic connections.
Yet another way entrepreneurs experience isolation is when they feel unsupported in taking a nontraditional path.
4. Faulty belief that an entrepreneur should always “have it all together”
Contributing to isolation is what's known as "impression management" – the idea that, for optics, entrepreneurs have to come across as "having it all together" and not showing any signs ofweakness.
Many entrepreneurs believe that, in order to be considered competent by their teams and stakeholders, they need to be perceived as infallible. This perpetuates shame and disconnection (which both cause depression), and discourages help-seeking behaviors.
5. Identity and self-worth become fused with the business and its success
"I cannot imagine who I am if I'm not the founder of X" , one of my clients anxiously admitted once.
Many of us , as entrepreneurs, lose ourselves in building our businesses. We become detached from our own needs, disconnected from friends and loved ones, and sacrifice other sources of deriving meaning such as relationships, parenting, travel and play.
The existential void (and self-worth tied to our company's success) is a manifestation of perfectionism that often is the source of anxiety, stress, insomnia and other emotional challenges.

If you are an entrepreneur and struggling with any of the challenges listed above, here are some tips you can use for managing your mental health, so as to keep thriving with your business in challenging & uncertain times :
1. Build Positive Intelligence for a higher degree of mental & emotional self-command
Positive Intelligence, a powerful framework researched & developed by Shirzad Chamine, at Stanford University, helps us understand the root causes of negative mental patterns that sabotage our happiness and success, through activation of negative emotional and behavioral patterns.
These unconscious patterns, help us to some extent to survive or succeed (most likely in childhood and formative years), but beyond a point, they start unconsciously sabotaging (rather than helping) our effectiveness, relationships and overall entrepreneurial success.
Understanding the root mental patterns that may be coming in the way of us achieving optimal effectiveness, happiness and success, and training the mind to deal with these patterns can provide transformational benefits.

2. Make time for yourself – If you do not care about yourself, no one else will
One mistake that entrepreneurs often make is that, they see their business journey as a sprint, rather than a marathon. They put in so much time and energy into the business growth initially (while at the same time neglecting their emotional, physical and wellness needs), that they end up soon with mental health and burnout-related issues, which in the long-term impact their effectiveness in running the business.
Reframe your mindset and think of your business as a marathon – which requires long-term resilience and endurance, that cannot be cultivated without the right levels of self-care.
Prioritize time for yourself (even if you start with 30 minutes per day), and do things that you really enjoy outside of your business work. This could include mindfulness/meditation, playing a sport, indulging in some other hobby like music, painting or reading, or just spending quality time with family or friends.
3. Seek help from an expert - a Coach or a Therapist – Remember that asking for help is not a weakness. Infact it’s a strength !
Our self-limiting beliefs and traditional societal constructs make us think that seeking help from a therapist or coach/counselor is a sign of weakness or incompetence. This evokes emotions related to shame, which in turn lead to avoidance tendencies.
Speaking to a Coach or Therapist, on the contrary, can provide you with the much needed space to open up with vulnerability, that is a crucial element of dealing with mental health challenges.
This can help you in reducing the impact of chronic stress and anxiety, which in turn can help you harness the full potential of your executive brain functions including strategic thinking, creativity, clear-headed focus, empathy and decisiveness.
4. Join a Support Group or a Peer-to-Peer Group/Mastermind
These groups are a great way to connect, in confidential environments, with other business owners or entrepreneurs that also are going through the same journey and similar challenges.
They can hence provide an invaluable resource for not only emotional & moral support, but also for creative thinking and ideation to solve difficult business problems using the collective wisdom of the entire group.
Check out the link below to apply for membership to the Alpha Group, which is the fastest growing Peer-to-Peer Group for Business Owners in the world (with groups now in more than 25 countries around the world). We also run online groups where entrepreneurs from different parts of world can join.
5. Take breaks – The need to be constantly
Taking a break from work, from time-to-time, is critical to restore battered mental capacities.
Step away from your computer and take a walk or a few days off to relax and rejuvenate. Not taking regular breaks significantly enhances the risk of burnout, which in turn can negatively impact your ability to lead the business.
6. Make sure you are feeding your body and mind with the “right fuel”
It is important to ensure that you take care of yourself, both physically and mentally.
Having a healthy diet, atleast 7-8 hours of sleep per day and regular physical exercise, while at the same time managing stress
