That said, the researchers point out they can still be misused in harmful ways.

As LLMs evolve, they’ll get better at giving detailed answers and using more polished language. But don’t worry—they’re unlikely to develop true complex reasoning. Dr. Harish Tayyar Madabushi, one of the researchers, even warns that worrying about existential risks from AI distracts us from real-world issues, like misuse or spreading misinformation.

Through thousands of experiments, the research team confirmed that LLMs’ abilities and limits come down to how well they follow instructions, understand natural language, and use memory. There’s no hidden magic or dangerous, unpredictable thinking happening here.

Professor Iryna Gurevych, the study’s lead author, reminds us that while AI does come with risks, fears of these models suddenly becoming superintelligent and uncontrollable just aren’t supported by evidence. Instead, future research should focus on more realistic concerns, like preventing AI from being used to spread fake news.
