So, here we go, TDI Roundup #2...

🔥①News & Views

  • Geek out - No code from spreadsheets? Congrats to Hong Kong based Coherent on their recently reported raise of US$75 million. Their key innovation is a piece of tech that allows excel models to be converted into scaleable APIs. Quote and underwriting are rich use cases alone. While their background and key area of focus is currently insurance this tech has broad potential and has the power to allow much more complex algorithms to be deployed far more cost effectively than before. Their investors are also notably backing this tech as having both global and multi-industry potential.
  • InsurTechs over-valued and over-hyped? (part 2) Following on from the observation in last months Roundup that established listed InsurTechs are taking a beating on public markets it was timely that McKinsey released a short article this month 'How insurtechs can accelerate the next wave of growth'. The article is measured and balanced and a reminder on the key success factors for InsurTech startups - drive for scale, and setting a goal of profitable growth within realistic timeframes.

At a time when investors are much less inclined to make pure growth bets (compared to the past few years), insurtechs that demonstrate solid economics and a realistic path to profitability will stand out from the crowd.

  • APAC continues to innovate. The TDI enabled 'World's Digital Insurance Awards' APAC leg has announced entries and finalists this month, with more than 40 entries, all sharing their innovations, and celebrating the teams involved. Do check out the entries and also register to vote to help decide the winners. More info later in the Roundup.
  • TDI Library report of the month: Deloitte - The future of small business insurance. A must read for those insurers and tech providers looking to meet the needs of SMEs. the report includes surveys on SMEs and what they look for in insurance. Despite high levels of satisfaction with current providers there is openness for new services. This space is going to see more focus and innovation in the years ahead.
  • On-demand webinar recommendation: Our Red Hat sponsored webinar on Connected Insurance is my recommendation for this month. The Forrester analysis brought clarity, and there was an excellent update from AIA's Group CTO on the power of the AIA Vitality model - and some clear proof points on how a long-term strategic approach to ecosystem building can pay dividends. Watch it here.
  • Podcast to listen to: Check out this 30 minute podcast on InsurTech sustainability with for some grass roots insights on creating long-term value. Listen to it here.
  • InsurTech in Action: This month we have selected Insurify who provide price comparison services on an omni-channel basis in the United States - direct and via advisors. Report summary and ITD booth are below - full analysis is here. For other analysis reports visit our In Action page.
