Digitalising Tribology, Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Surfaces
Hello all,
Hope you're well. This week I've been thinking a lot about digitalisation and the integration of sensors. This area has had increasing research interest in recent years and it seems that we may soon reach the technological level to allow for the widespread adoption of surface and other smart monitoring systems. This will only improve upon Industry 4.0. From my experience in the electronics industry, seeing this implemented into the existing machine data analytics systems will be exciting. Hope you have a good couple of weeks and catch you in the next issue!
Research highlights: Highly Cited
Industry 4.0 will bring about a paradigm shift in systems management and data processing with the integration of AI and integrated sensors. Tribology is key to these developments with improved sensing allowing for better maintenance, monitoring and diagnostics leading to enhanced energy savings. "Tribology and Industry: From the Origins to 4.0" by Enrico Ciulli highlights the impact that tribology can have in the new industrial revolution.
Research Resources: Peer Review
The peer review system is having a tough time right now. It's becoming more difficult to find reviewers (understandable when it's not adequately rewarded to many) and predatory publishers are eroding confidence in the system. The Stacks Journal is trying something different and attempting to provide a faster, more transparent model by organising committees of researchers to assess manuscripts. Interesting Infographics
No matter how impressive a new technology is, it can take years for full adoption. Technologies such as smartphones are now so ingrained in our everyday lives that it's difficult to imagine their absence. It'll be interesting to see how AI is adopted in the coming years especially as it's usage has exploded via big tech firms. Explore more about this infographic from the Visual Capitalist on Voronoi.

Digital Solutions for Tribology - The Journey to Net Zero
Friday, 9:00-16:30 on 8th November 2024
Hosted at the Institute of Physics, 37 Caledonian Road, London, N1 9BU
This ‘Digital Solutions for Tribology’ one-day event jointly organised by IOP and IMechE Tribology Groups is the 3rd of the ‘Tribology and the Journey to Net Zero’ Series initiated by IMechE Tribology Group in 2022.
The seminar will cover a spectrum of digital techniques as applied to tribology, for example, digital twins, simulation, Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence, molecular modelling, data processing and data fusion. Applications may range from laboratory and research testing through to automation in Industry 4.0 and field implementation of commercial products. Tribology is key to helping achieve the ambitious drive to carbon net zero by 2050, from increasing machine efficiency (by reducing carbon footprint and premature scrappage) to enabling new technologies which positively impact the design and design practice and operation for moving parts.
The meeting will conclude with a chance to attend the IoP Green Economy Networking Reception and an opportunity to find out how physics can help to power the green economy. Find out more and see the programme here.

What we’re reading
The advancement of technologies to fulfil Industry 4.0 would be incomplete without the use of advanced surface engineering to create sensing coatings or leverage the use of triboelectric nanogenerators. This will enable tribotronic (tribology and electronics) systems to shift from a device centric paradigm to a surface centric paradigm with the advent of the Internet of Surfaces. An app a day
Zotero is a well-known reference management system that I've spoken about previously but I've recently been re-evaluating my reference management system. With Zotero's new update and some handy add-ons you can build an excellent referencing system for use on multiple devices. With online features fully optional, this program allows you to easily add references using browser extensions and cite in a number of word processors. Though Zotero does offer its own hosted cloud storage you're able to move your library to any cloud storage system with the ZotMoov add-on and further control your own library by syncing with any WebDav server.
