The digitalization of the construction industry

Foreword (1 of 6)

The digitalization of the construction industry is far more extensive than the topics of Building Information Modeling (BIM) or Lean Construction. Many software manufacturers develop a wide variety of solutions in a wide variety of areas. There are a variety of interfaces with a wide variety of export and import solutions. No one - not even the big ones - has dared to approach the big picture so far. Perhaps it will help them if, based on my experience, I give them a brief insight into the scope we are talking about.

Based on my history, you will understand why I am concerned about the digitization of the construction industry.

After studying civil engineering, I had my first engagements as a construction manager in construction companies. Digitization was at level 0.0 in the 70s of the previous century. The first personal computers with the MS-DOS operating system have just been purchased. The PCs were in the companies and were to be used. I was always the youngest in the team and my colleagues said that I learned how to use computers during my studies. I familiarized myself with the software and taught my colleagues the first steps. So, it came about that I took part in one of the first IT courses for architects and engineers in an educational institution. There I was able to familiarize myself with the different programs faster than my colleagues and was happy to help everyone. In addition to the course, I worked with a local Autodesk partner. In German-speaking countries, the Autodesk business developed slowly at the beginning of the 80s. Autodesk had two employees who had their office in Frankfurt. After my course, I joined there immediately. Five years later, I founded my own CAD/IT system house.

The spectrum and project topics of my customers were very diverse. We have had customers from all areas of the construction industry: architectural offices, engineering offices, project management companies, property developers, many different manufacturers of building products, real estate companies, real estate operators as well as customers who were active in facility management, shop floor management and relocation management. After the sale of my system house with 4 branches to a competitor, I had more time to deal more intensively with the digitization of the construction industry. Due to the many customer projects, I was familiar with most of the building blocks to put together the big picture.
