Tempco Flexible Heaters for Hoppers in Liquid Filling Equipment

An original equipment manufacturer of liquid filling machines needed to address the viscosity of the liquid for a specific machine they were designing for the filling and packaging industry. Because surface heat was the preferred method of heating the liquid in this process, Tempco recommended silicone rubber heaters. Two heaters with the following features were designed and manufactured:

  • Heaters are independently controlled with surface mount thermostats rated at 70°-190°F
  • Mounting Method of boot hooks and springs so that the heaters can be easily removed
  • Electrical termination of a simple, 120-volt plug
  • Two different wattages were used for this application: 500 Watts for the larger heater and 250 watts for the smaller heater
  • UL recognized component heater

3D Formed Silicone Rubber Heater for Aerospace Application

We wrote a whole newsletter based on freeze protection a few months ago and here is another example of that. A customer in the aerospace industry needed a heating solution for a motorized water valve. Because the valve was going to be located in an unpressurized and unheated portion of the aircraft, piping before and after the valve was already heated. The valve was small and intricate, so Tempco designed a custom three-dimensional heater for the application that included the following features:

  • Designed to receive 28V of power from a control box
  • Operates at 2 watts/square inch
  • Holes on three heater faces allow the fittings on the valve to run through the heater
  • Thermal insulation covers the heater to protect the back side from excessive heat and direct most of the heat towards the valve body
  • A snap action, heater sense thermostat with open/close setpoints incorporated onto the heater body which allows more precise control and prevents overheating of the valve
  • Thermostat setpoints of 70°F/40°F keeps the heater operation temperature above the freezing point of water, preventing any ice buildup within the valve body
  • A custom mold for the thermostat because of its unique size
  • Cutouts in the sponge for the thermostat for precise fitting

Silicone Rubber Heater on Steel Rule Die

Thankfully, silicone rubber heaters come in all shapes and sizes.  A customer needed a long, narrow heater for a steel rule die on an aluminum plate and Tempco was able to design one that fits their needs. It had the following dimensions:

  • Width of less than 0.75 inches
  • Length of 50 inches to reach around the perimeter of the die
  • The heater wrapped nicely around the gradual bend radii of the steel rule die, providing the efficient heat transfer that the customer needed.
