Discovering Your Energy: The Power of Knowing Who You Are and How You Show Up in Life

Have you noticed that some days everything seems to go your way, while on others, nothing works out as planned?

And have you noticed how your mood can influence the interactions and experiences you have throughout the day? This isn't just coincidence—it's the power of your energy at work.

Understanding who you are ‘being’ and how you show up in your life can dramatically impact what you attract and how you experience the world.

The Energy You Bring

Energy is more than just physical vitality. It's the thoughts you think, the emotions you feel and emit, the intentions you set, the decisions you make, and the actions you take. This energy influences how others perceive you and how situations unfold around you. It influences who and what you attract into your life experience. You can think of it as a silent language that speaks volumes about your inner state.

Why Energy Matters

  • Attraction: The energy you put out acts like a magnet, attracting people and experiences with the same energetic vibration. Positive energy draws positive experiences, while negative and unhealthy energy brings challenges and setbacks. For example, I grew up with very low confidence and self-esteem, and as a result, I tended to attract people who were emotionally unhealthy. They might take advantage of my good nature, attempt to manipulate me, bully me, or generally pass on their toxic energy to me – which I did take on (before I knew better). I attracted people and situations that reflected back to me how I felt about myself. I didn’t value myself, and they didn’t either.
  • Connection: People naturally gravitate towards others who make them feel good. When your energy is balanced and positive, you build stronger, more meaningful connections. As my confidence and sense of self-worth and value improved, I stopped attracting these kinds of situations and people. The energy I show up with has improved dramatically, and as a result, my experiences are much more positive and enjoyable.
  • Opportunities: A vibrant, enthusiastic energy opens doors. It signals that you are ready and willing to embrace new opportunities. One of the things that often surprises people when they begin to improve and master their own energy is how many things change in their life for the better. They usually come with one challenge they’re struggling with and as they do the inner work and change their energy, they find that everything improves and new opportunities they could never have dreamed of show up for them.

Recognizing Your Energy

Before you can improve your energy, it’s important to understand it. Self-awareness is the most important first step. Here are some tips to help you become more aware of the energy you are projecting:

Self-Reflection

  • Daily Check-In: Take a few moments each day to ask yourself how you feel. Are you energized or drained? Happy or stressed? Your emotional state is a direct indicator of your energy.
  • Mindfulness Practices: Engage in mindfulness activities such as meditation, journaling, being in nature, or simply sitting quietly. These practices help you tune into your inner world and recognize the subtleties of your energy.

Feedback from Others

  • Observe Reactions: Notice how people respond to you. Are they enthusiastic and engaging, or do they seem distant? Are they critical and bullying or kind and supportive? Their reactions can offer valuable insights into the energy you're emitting.
  • Ask for Input: Don’t be afraid to ask trusted friends or family members how they perceive your energy. Their perspectives can help you see yourself more clearly. Ask them to be honest, and be willing to hear the truth, because that’s the only way you can make necessary changes.

Improving Your Energy

Once you’re aware of your current energy, you can take steps to elevate it. Here are some actionable tips to help you put out the best possible energy into the world:

Practice Gratitude

Gratitude shifts your focus from what's lacking to what's abundant in your life. This simple yet powerful practice can significantly boost your energy.

  • Gratitude Journaling: Write down at least three things you're grateful for each day. This helps train your mind to look for the positive. Remember to include things about yourself you’re grateful for too
  • Express Appreciation: Make it a habit to thank others, even for small acts of kindness. This not only uplifts your energy but also strengthens your connections. Remember to include appreciation for yourself for each change you make and for being willing to do this work.

Nurture Positive Relationships

Surround yourself with people who uplift and inspire you. The energy of those around you has a tremendous influence on your own.

  • Quality over Quantity: Focus on deepening relationships with a few positive individuals rather than spreading yourself thin across many superficial connections.
  • Set Boundaries: Protect your energy by setting boundaries with those who drain you. It's okay to limit your time with negative influences.

Engage in Activities that Energize You

Do more of what lights you up and makes your heart sing. When you're engaged in activities that bring you joy, your energy naturally elevates.

  • Pursue Hobbies: Whether it's painting, dancing, exercising, reading or gardening, make time for activities that you love.
  • Stay Active: Physical activity is a great way to boost your energy. Find a form of exercise you enjoy, whether it's yoga, hiking, or tennis.

Cultivate a Positive Mindset

Your thoughts shape your reality. By cultivating a positive mindset, you can transform your energy and, in turn, your life. I want to be clear that this is NOT about forcing yourself to think positive thoughts and denying any ‘negative’ thoughts. Having a positive mindset means that you acknowledge any unhealthy or unsupportive thoughts, recognize what’s causing them, and recognize that you have an opportunity to learn something from them – a deeper level of self-awareness.

  • Affirmations: Use positive affirmations to reframe negative thoughts. For example, replace "I can't do this" with "I am capable and resilient."
  • Mindfulness: Practice mindfulness to stay present and avoid getting caught up in negative thought patterns.

The Ripple Effect

When you consciously work on your energy, you don't just change your life—you impact everyone around you. Your positive energy creates a ripple effect, inspiring and encouraging others to elevate their own energy. Imagine a world where everyone is a little more mindful, a little more positive. It all starts with you.

Reflective Questions

  • How do I feel right now? What is my energy like today?
  • How do others respond to my energy? What feedback have I received?
  • What activities or people drain my energy? What can I do to protect my energy?
  • What small changes can I make today to elevate my energy?

Conclusion

Understanding who you are ‘being’, what energy you are bringing and how you show up in life is a journey of self-discovery and transformation. By becoming aware of your energy and making conscious efforts to improve it, you attract more positive experiences, build more meaningful connections, and open yourself up to a world of opportunities. Every small change adds up and builds momentum. Start today, and watch how your life transforms in beautiful and unexpected ways.

So, who are you ‘being’ today? How are you showing up in your life?

The energy you bring into the world is your choice, and with that choice, you have the power to create a life filled with joy, connection, and endless possibilities. Let's embark on this journey together, one positive step at a time.
