For years, I was the queen of setting goals that looked great on paper but went nowhere. I’d dive headfirst into a laundry list of tasks, staying busy but never truly making real progress. The excitement of a fresh start would fizzle out. Come to find out, I was missing one crucial piece: the planning mindset. It's not just about setting goals, it’s about kickstarting your year with purpose, aligning your actions with what truly matters, and building momentum that lasts beyond the first few months.
The Mindset Shift That Changed Everything
One day, I stopped asking, "What needs to be done?" and started asking, "Why does this matter?" This was a real turning point. I realized goals aren’t about checking boxes, (although as a project manager I love checking boxes). They’re about creating meaningful momentum. And that starts with being honest with yourself. When I first began setting goals, I treated them like a to-do list, focused more on crossing off tasks than aligning them with a deeper purpose. But over time, I learned it’s not about the number of goals you set, it's about how I approach them.
The planning mindset is rooted in intentionality. It’s about being clear on why you’re setting goals in the first place. Without purpose, it’s easy to lose motivation and focus. I learned this the hard way during a project where I had an endless list of tasks but no clear understanding of why I was doing them. The result? Burnout. I was busy but not making real progress. Everything changed when I began asking, “Why does this matter?” Connecting my tasks to a larger vision not only kept me focused but also gave me the energy to tackle them with purpose.
