Do - Live- Be- Better Detroit Edition
Today wasn't just any day, it was incredibly #HRAwesome day made possible by some incredibly amazing humans. Today I got to take the stage with 7 other individuals in a small intimate audience in a movie theater to share insight, wisdom and network. This event, hosted by Terry Bean, Shawn Lee and Charlie Wollborg was the second in a four part monthly series called "Do Better, Live Better". This is a series of mini Tedx style conversations leading up to the main event, Tedx Detroit on October 26, 2022. The next gathering will be on August 31, 2022 in Royal Oak and you do NOT want to miss it. #Bethere
This experience was made possible by the power of connection(s) new and nurtured.
First, if you are not from Detroit you are probably not familiar with this tri-fecta and kings of networking who are on the executive board at Tedx Detroit. For those in the @HRUnite community, Terry Bean is no stranger as he just keynoted our annual conference for the second time (and rocked that stage) - but today was the first time I got to meet (in real life) two other individuals that have had such a significant impact on our Metro Detroit community, and bonus get to take the same stage as them. In addition, I got to truly get to know them and go from fan lurker to connected. Nurturing the power of connections to inspire and support others - #Priceless
Second, my son Kirk loves to watch me speak and even better - loves to learn from others. He instantly became a #TerryBeanFan thanks to HRUnite! and attended his first Tedx event with me last year (on this very day). It was also his first networking event which he navigated with poise. It is not everyday that your 16 year old asks to come to work with you (but not if there is HR'ing involved, which there was but only for 10 minutes on the way home). Hanging out with my son and equally being inspired. #Priceless
Takeaway's from today's speakers -
Shawn Lee, Cr. Photog. dropped the mic with a statement that will remain the quote of the day for me going forward.
" Before we can kill our external giants, we must first kill the giant of low self worth within." ~ Shawn Lee
Shawn's signature hashtag is #rockthat but I am now adding #🔥🔥🔥 to represent the experience. Shawn has this incredible gift of insight and energy that all those who have the honor of hearing are forever impacted.
Nancy Brennan, LMSW highlighted the importance of self care in mental health. "Moods fluctuate but when it get's to a point where you can't get out of it - seek help." She shared some great calming and breathing tips for coping.

Robin Shear highlighted that we needed to actively find joy and celebrate it. Create and own your own "Joy List". Mine includes coffee and cheesecake with good friends (like Brenda Meller🥧 )
Charlie Wollborg is an incredible speaker. I finally got to experience him live (in real life). He is brilliant, witty and a master brand strategist. Charlie keeps it real/ In short when it comes to personal/company branding "Out: Educate, In: Titillate." Charlie wins the award for best presentation ever seen at a speaking event hands down. #NoSpoilers #FanGirlMoment #Epic
Renée T. Walker helped all of us recognize that we all need a timeout. Renee is another individual that has helped shape Detroit (and our surrounding communities) for the better. Renee highlighted the need to be intentional in our actions including the need to recharge. It was an incredible honor to meet Renee in person and also celebrate her love for the sport of golf.
Bruce Covington MBA, SSBB shared four points in his journey on finding success and why emotional intelligence matters in the workplace. I celebrate his journey from corporate to successful business owner and his ability as a leader to take the actions recognizing how emotions can be a barrier or an asset to our success.
Terry Bean closed the session with a snapshot from one of my all time favorite presentations - "The Five Pillars of a Life Well Lived" (the keynote presentation at HRUnite! 2020). This quote accurately summarizes this incredible event for me and others in attendance today.
"Harmony is What You Seek" ~ Terry Bean
Thank you to Charlie, Shawn and Terry for your vision in bringing us all together today and for the incredible connections that were created as a result. To those I met and had the pleasure of getting to you know you better, thank you for your gift of your time and story!
Do Live Be Better will be live again on August 31, 2022 at the Emagine Theater in Royal Oak, Michigan.
