Do Power Differently: Tuning Into Our Vision

“In order to build a world that works for everybody, we need more leaders to step forward who have the capacity to imagine beyond how the world has always been.”—Carla Goldstein

In previous articles, we introduced our leadership curriculum that focuses on redefining power and engaging in an exploratory journey via the five leadership essentials of Values, Vessel, Voice, Vision, and Voyage–the 5 V’s. We outlined Values, Vessel, and Voice

Now, we’re going to explore the concept of Vision. Here’s our definition:

Vision: A compelling image of the future that is both aspirational and achievable.

Research shows that many women are more apt to support someone else’s vision than stay focused on their own, which is why we need to take time to cultivate our imagination and hone our vision not only for ourselves, but for others and for the world. Visioning is in fact a key function of leadership, and it is a skill that can be strengthened with practice.

We invite you to take a few moments to reflect on vision:

  • Whose vision moves you to your core, and why?
  • What are your aspirations for yourself, your community, and the world?
  • Consider a time when something got in the way of moving toward your vision and an action you took to address it. Or name a current challenge and possible action steps you might take.

Many of us need help making time and space to tune in to our vision and can benefit from the opportunity to speak it out loud. It takes time and effort, and it can also be joyful and energizing.
