Do The Thing

Do The Thing

I know this seems obvious, but the more I do the thing, the more inspired I am to improve the thing.

Developing anything is an iterative process. Currently, I am developing my game and a mastermind. I've been working on the game for over a year and the mastermind, actively for about a month. They are wildly different but also, exactly the same.

I can sit down for hours on end, brainstorming ideas for them both but eventually, I find myself hitting a brick wall or arguing with myself in circles. The most productive time is always at the start, improvements and good ideas degrade over time.

But when I show the thing to people or talk about it with them or play with them, it's like I can't turn off the good ideas from spilling out of my head. Those ideas need their own time to marinate - both in the development of the rules as well as subconscious processing and allowing myself to disconnect mentally from the whole thing.

I go through periods where I do the thing too often and don't spend enough time improving it. I go through other periods where I spend too much time improving the thing and not enough time doing the thing. It's a delicate balance to optimize the feedback loop this creates and ride the momentum of forward progress.

I've been stuck in a rut of improving the thing for too long. I had some incredible conversations last week that inspired so many great ideas for my mastermind. I ran an awesome session on Friday and came up with a lot of great new rules for the game that I'm excited to test.

I've once again found a bit of balance and I'm watching progress pick up pace on both these projects. I need to keep riding this wave. I need to keep doing the thing - keep getting the feedback, spend the time to make the necessary changes, and then get right back in front of more people.

I obsess over how I spend my time and my top concern day over day, week over week is productivity - it always has been. There are a lot of things I'm doing that feel productive but aren't moving the needle. Lately, doing the thing has been moving the needle for me more significantly than anything else that has been fighting for space on my calendar.

It's been a good reminder that I just need to keep doing the thing - obviously : )
