In today’s competitive job market, personal branding isn’t just about your skills, qualifications, or experience, it’s also about how you present yourself. LinkedIn, as the premier professional networking platform, offers an unparalleled opportunity to shape and share your brand with millions of professionals worldwide. But with so many profiles looking similar, how can you make yours stand out?

The answer could be simpler than you think, it’s about having something unique, a signature style that becomes synonymous with who you are. One of the most memorable lessons I’ve learned comes from a fantastic co-worker who has made the bow-tie a central part of his personal brand. His LinkedIn profile, like so many others, showcases his skills, experience, and accomplishments, but it’s the bow-tie that consistently grabs attention. In a sea of professionals all wearing the same generic look, his distinctive accessory serves as a visual cue that makes him unforgettable. It speaks to his personality, his attention to detail, and his commitment to standing out from the crowd.

Why Unique Style Matters

A unique style isn't about being eccentric for the sake of it. It's about being authentic and memorable, while reinforcing your professional brand. Here’s why it works:

1. Instant Recognition

The more you incorporate something unique into your personal brand, the more it becomes associated with you. Just as companies use logos or colors to create recognition, professionals can use certain elements of style to do the same. For my co-worker, the bow-tie has become part of his identity. It’s his signature move. People remember the bow-tie, and over time, they begin to remember him as a professional who brings creativity, confidence, and a sense of individuality to the workplace.

2. Reflects Personality and Values

Your LinkedIn profile is more than just a resume, it's an opportunity to communicate who you are beyond your job title. A bow-tie, for instance, isn’t just an accessory, it suggests a level of sophistication, attention to detail, and a slightly unconventional approach. If you’re someone who values standing out or pushing boundaries in your field, the bow-tie can signal that to your audience, without you needing to say a word. It’s an easy way to add a layer of personality to your professional image.

We’ve all been there, when you’re at a networking event, or in a meeting, and someone asks you about that small but unique element of your outfit. My co-worker’s bow-tie isn’t just a style choice; it’s a catalyst for connection. People see it and ask about it, leading to conversations that help build rapport. The same thing can happen on LinkedIn. A distinctive touch can make someone pause, smile, and reach out with a message that starts off with, “I love the bow-tie!” Before you know it, you’ve created an opportunity to network, collaborate, or even land a new job.

How to Leverage Your Unique Style on LinkedIn

So, how do you integrate a unique element like a bow-tie, or any other style choice into your LinkedIn branding strategy? Here are some tips:

1. Make It Authentic to You

The key to making any unique style choice effective is ensuring it aligns with your authentic self. Don’t choose something because it seems trendy or because someone else is doing it. If the bow-tie feels right for you, wear it proudly. If it’s something else a specific color you wear often, a particular accessory, for me I like watches and hats, or even a unique way you structure your LinkedIn posts, lean into it. Your personal brand should reflect who you truly are.

2. Be Consistent

Consistency is crucial when building a personal brand. The bow-tie my colleague wears isn’t just a one-time thing it’s part of his everyday professional look. Similarly, whatever unique element you choose to incorporate should appear regularly whether it’s in your photos, your posts, or even your profile description. This consistency helps reinforce the image or brand you’re trying to create.

3. Use It in Your Visual Content

Your LinkedIn profile isn’t just words, it’s visual too. Whether through your profile photo, banner, or posts, make sure that your unique style is incorporated into your visual presence. If you’re known for something specific, like my co-worker’s bow-tie, let that show up in your photos. Your LinkedIn banner is a great place to add personality, too. If you don’t wear a bow-tie, perhaps you use a striking color palette, or add a graphic element that speaks to your brand.

4. Tell the Story Behind It

Don’t just leave the bow-tie (or any other unique element) hanging there, tell the story behind it. Why did you choose this particular style? What does it say about you? Craft a post or include a section in your profile that explains the significance of your unique style. Not only will this show that you have thought about your personal brand, but it also humanizes you and connects with others on a deeper level.

In a professional world that often values conformity, being true to yourself can be your biggest asset. Whether it’s a bow-tie, a specific color, or even a quirky hobby you incorporate into your LinkedIn presence, having a unique style makes you memorable, helps you communicate your personality, and can set you apart from others in your field. It’s not just about the skillset you bring to the table it’s about the impression you leave once you walk away.
