  1. Wrong Words: ATSs recognize matches as exact words and phrases - They aren't as sophisticated as Google, so they don't count synonyms or common meanings as a criteria match.
  2. Using Resume/Job Strategies That Are Penalized By ATSs: Strategies that emphasize sending a high volume of resumes rarely work well with ATS hiring processes.
  3. Wrong Job Description: The real search criteria are usually very different than the criteria in the job posting. Published job descriptions are written by HR, with the purpose of avoiding HR lawsuits, not to help you get interviews. Broad, generic job descriptions provide more effective legal protection, and are usually written a year before the job is advertised. Hiring Managers realize that the published job description doesn't meet their current individual needs, so they send different search criteria to the recruiter.


Most career coaches and outplacement advisors teach job seekers to try and overcome being ignored by ATSs with high application volume, rather than fixing the underlying problems that cause you to be ignored.
