Do you need to know everything in Cloud native?

Do you need to know everything in Cloud native?

The cloud-native landscape has evolved significantly over the years, with the number of CNCF projects and new tools growing exponentially. With the adoption of Kubernetes and the related ecosystem of helper tools to solve complex challenges, the entire CNCF landscape revolves around these innovations.

However, the big question for evangelists, researchers, and those doing POCs is: what tools are available to solve specific challenges? For example, if you're looking for a tool to implement a particular topic, such as monitoring, there are many options to choose from. How do you learn about all these tools? Is it even necessary to know about everything?

If you're an evangelist or a DevRel working in the cloud-native ecosystem, it's beneficial to know about as many tools as possible, stay up-to-date with the landscape, and understand where innovation is happening. For that, you can use a variety of resources. One great option is, of course, following Kubesimplify’s CNCFMinutes playlist. Another is attending the CNCF Technical Oversight Committee (TOC) meetings to see the projects in the sandbox, incubating, and graduating stages. However, not all roles require this depth of knowledge. For those looking to implement or integrate specific tools, it's better to narrow your search based on the key points that matter to your project. Then, evaluate the scale at which a project has been adopted, look at the adopter list, and conduct mini POCs. These mini POCs help you understand the ease of setup, community support, day-two operations, scalability, etc., giving you an overview of whether to proceed with that project or consider another option.

In summary, you don't need to know everything - no one does. It really depends on your job role and how much you need to stay updated in a particular field.

Technology is changing rapidly as people work to solve new challenges, and open source is a great avenue for sharing those solutions with the community.

What have I been doing?

As promised the CKS scenarios series has begun on Kubesimplify that will help you in clearing the Kubernetes CKS exam. So make sure to press the bell icon and do not miss any updates. Next video going out today.

Upcoming talks:

  • I will be speaking at KubeCon NA with Saloni and trying to make it one of the best talks that I will be delivering so if you are attending Kubecon NA in person then do add this talk to your agenda.
  • I will be speaking at an upcoming webinar with Sysdig on CKA and CKS with upcoming changes to these exams.

I am working on adding new videos to CNCFMinutes and also a new course is in progress :) Stay tunes, subscribe and keep commenting what content you need from us.

  • Building the OpenTofu Registry - The OpenTofu team has released the beta version of the OpenTofu Registry Search, allowing users to search for and view documentation on providers and modules. They built the registry to keep costs low, relying on Cloudflare's R2 and GitHub integrations, and the search functionality uses a database service to handle a vast dataset efficiently.
  • Our container platform is in production. It has GPUs. Here’s an early look by Cloudflare - Cloudflare has launched a new container platform with GPU support, used in production for services like Workers AI and Browser Rendering API, and has shared details about its architecture and global scheduling approach. The platform aims to simplify running containers across Cloudflare’s network without developers needing to manage infrastructure or choose specific regions.
  • Leveraging benchstat Projections in Go Benchmark Analysis! - In this post, Bartek introduces benchstat's new features for Go benchmarking, highlighting its usefulness for A/B comparisons with projections, filtering, and grouping across sub-benchmarks. He explains two benchmarking workflows across different versions and across different cases and how benchstat enables reproducibility, reliability, and flexibility in analyzing efficiency improvements.
  • What cybersecurity professionals are saying about AI - AI security has become a major concern for CISOs, with generative AI presenting challenges such as increased malware creation, sophisticated phishing, and a lack of governance in usage. The need for proper oversight, governance, and data classification has become crucial as AI continues to integrate into third-party products and company operations, posing risks to the software supply chain.
  • Why Kubernetes is removing in-tree cloud-provider integration support in v1.31, and how it can affect you - Kubernetes v1.31 will remove in-tree cloud-provider integrations, requiring users to transition to out-of-tree providers for cloud services. This change will allow cloud providers to independently develop features and updates while making Kubernetes core leaner, more secure, and more flexible, but requires users to adapt to new methods for integrating with cloud environments like Google Cloud, AWS, and Azure.
  • System Initiative is the Future - System Initiative has launched as a new open-source platform aimed at revolutionizing DevOps automation by replacing traditional Infrastructure as Code with a system of reactive digital twins and real-time collaboration features. Built to provide faster feedback loops, greater flexibility, and enhanced collaboration, it aims to simplify complex infrastructure management, making it more efficient and enjoyable for teams.
