“Doing things differently and better”: Supporting Chile’s vision for a net zero economy

I’m so excited to share some big news for my team and I today: X’s moonshot for the electric grid will be working with Chile’s national electricity system operator Coordinador Eléctrico Nacional to support Chile’s ambitious goals to achieve a net zero economy by 2050.

Chile’s goals are built on the kind of audacious vision that we’ll need to tackle the climate crisis, and we couldn’t be more proud to work with El Coordinador to build the tools that will enable their work. To build a modern, resilient electric grid that will support transition to renewable energy takes partnership, deep expertise, and a mutual commitment to innovation. My team and I first met El Coordinador in 2019 to discuss innovative ways to enable the decarbonized grid. For a great partnership to work, the time has to be right, and the intentions have to be aligned — and we found that we were perfectly matched. From the start, our partners within El Coordinador have been committed to learning and teaching, and to designing the right project with the right people. We wanted to learn more about their challenges: What was their approach and where were their biggest challenges? What had been successful, and what had failed? How could X’s breakthrough technologies — like artificial intelligence and machine learning, which are perfectly suited to complex systems problems — help them? 

El Coordinador is focused on doing things differently and better, and they’re asking the same questions as we do within X – why will this be different? How will this be better? That’s exactly how we think: don’t just build something because you can, and because it’s achievable. Do it because it isn’t being done anywhere else — and because, if we succeed, we’ll have done something that will benefit everyone.
