Don't Derail your Train of Thought

A great ability of Human beings is their power to think. Thoughts usually come in and follow a series of developments which we can simply call "Train of Thoughts". A more structured definition would be "A succession of connected ideas, a path of reasoning, as in You've interrupted my train of thought; now what was I saying? This idiom, which uses train in the sense of “an orderly sequence,” was first recorded in 1651, in philosopher Thomas Hobbes's Leviathan ."

Cogito, ergo sum - René Descartes

How to Keep on Track

Maintaining your train of thought can be difficult, particularly when navigating complex or multi-layered subjects. Below are some tactics to assist you in keeping focused and clear:

  1. Set Clear Objectives: Define specific goals and objectives for your thinking process. Knowing what you want to achieve will help you stay focused on relevant topics and avoid getting sidetracked.
  2. Break Down the Topic: Divide the topic into smaller, more manageable subtopics or questions. This will make it easier to process information and stay organized in your thinking.
  3. Create an Outline: Develop a structured outline or framework to guide your thinking process. Start with an introduction, main points, and conclusion, and then fill in details as you go along.
  4. Take Breaks: Allow yourself regular breaks to rest and recharge. Taking short breaks can help prevent mental fatigue and improve concentration when you return to your thinking process.
  5. Eliminate Distractions: Minimize distractions in your environment to help maintain focus. Turn off notifications, find a quiet space to work, and limit multitasking to stay on track with your train of thought.
  6. Practice Mindfulness: Practice mindfulness techniques, such as deep breathing or meditation, to help clear your mind and stay present in the moment. This can enhance your ability to concentrate and maintain focus on your thinking process.
  7. Review and Reflect: Periodically review your progress and reflect on your thinking process. Assess whether you are staying on track with your objectives and make adjustments as needed to keep moving forward.

By incorporating these strategies into your thinking process, you can improve your ability to stay on track and maintain focus, even when dealing with complex or challenging topics.

Technology as an enabler and disabler

In the digital age, our phones and computers are equipped with numerous applications designed to capture and organize our thoughts. However, these devices can also serve as distractions, diverting us from our intended tasks. It is essential to utilize these tools effectively, always remembering that true discipline originates internally.

So keep inventing, keep thinking. If you don't think you are not!!
