Don’t keep your knowledge to yourself!

Share your expertise, and build your media profile

The media are hungry for your knowledge.

If you are a published author or a professional speaker, a professor or a retired expert in your field, or you work in a specialist industry or you manage comms for those who do – the media need you.

There are more media outlets than ever before, and they are crying out for interesting insights for their audiences.

Online publications serve high-value, niche audiences. Podcasts have developed loyal listener communities. Subject-matter focused YouTube channels have garnered significant followings. They have a huge appetite for guests.

Traditional print- and broadcast media have moved with this trend, too. They are no longer bound by the number of pages in their publications, or hours of airtime. Beyond their physical publications and free-to-air or cable channels they are publishing using Telegram or LINE, and their videos appear on TikTok and YouTube. Conferences and seminars have become an important revenue driver for many media companies, which means they have an insatiable appetite for keynote speakers and panellists.

Being interviewed by the media demonstrates you are a central authority on your subject. It’s your opportunity to be featured as the credible expert.

You are a published author

You know better than anyone how much effort you put into writing your book. You were excited at the prospect of being a published author. You pitched your concept, researched competing publications and negotiated with publishers. Then you worked with editors and graphic design artists, and conducted additional research into your subject matter.

But it soon became a hugely difficult project to finish: you invested endless hours in writing and re-writing it. In the end you had to commit to marketing it and buying a certain number of copies yourself.

So, are you making the most of it? Are you getting the media exposure you deserve?

You are a professional speaker

You get paid for speaking at events on topics in which you are the recognised authority. Perhaps you already have an agent, or you are a member of a speaker bureau.

But are you getting as many enquiries as you think you should?

In order to attract enquiries for paid speaking engagements your prospective clients must find out about you first. You must build awareness so you, too, can say “as featured on major news networks” on your speaker profile.

Are you being featured in the media so you can legitimately make this claim?

You are a retired expert

You were at the cutting edge in your domain for years. You built your knowledge and expertise in your area of specialisation over decades. And then you retired – but you still have so much to give.

Media love experts like you because you are able to give third-party, expert comments without the imperative of satisfying short term commercial needs. Having taken a step back from your career you can also provide high-level dispassionate, industrywide insights.

But are you putting all those years of experience to good use? Are you building your legacy and helping educate a whole new generation of media consumers with the knowledge you’ve gained over the years?

You are working in the comms industry

You run a Public Relations Agency, or you are an in-house Communications Director at company or an educational institution.

You have a slate of experts to put forward to the media, demonstrating bench strength in your ranks. They can offer their comments to the media while fulfilling your KPIs of securing favourable exposure.

But are you speaking to media beyond your existing contacts list? Are you reaching out to journalists you’ve never met, and who you didn’t find on Telum?
