Don't Shut Down the Economy, Just Shut Down the Virus Transmission!

There is no need for lockdowns or shutdowns. If most of us would wear a simple face mask in the public, we can shut down the primary transmission pathway of Covid-19, and reduce infection by >90% with or without shutdowns, massive testing, or a working vaccine.

If the Federal government would not mandate such a simple requirement, perhaps the state Governor could, as it is recommended by WHO. If the government would not do this, perhaps you and I could just do this for our own protection. If only there is an 80% compliance rate to this sensible behavior, it would make a huge difference by lowering the exponential infection rates by those non-symptomatic spreaders and shutdowns the primary entry pathway for the wearer, or at least makes it hard to touch the nose or mouth.

Starting tomorrow, I will wear one in the public - to protect myself and protect others in case I have any bacteria or virus unknowingly. I think everyone should wear a face mask in the public just to have a safer reopening for our tattering economy, for our own hygiene and the public good. It does not have to be an N95 or even a surgical-grade. This simple act will work with or without a vaccine, social distancing, or massive PCR or antibody testing. It has to work as it is just common sense to place a physical barrier to stop the free transmission of liquid droplets from the source and into our respiratory systems.

And if you don't have one, just buy some from amazon.com with shipment in 1 or 2 weeks. It was $30 for a pack of 50 two days ago when I ordered, but now it is $40. Or I can just drop you one by mail for free.

Let's just move on with our lives by making a simple adjustment by wearing a mask in the public!

Postscript with an excerpt from Dr. Fauci from his recent interview with National Geographics:

What’s your position on the general public wearing face masks?

I'm glad you asked, because it has evolved over the weeks and months. When there was first discussion, it was at a time when face masks—either surgical masks or N95 respirators—were at high scarcity.

Let's assume that we now have enough masks or that you could easily make a cloth covering, as was suggested appropriately by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. I think those are reasonable assumptions. We know that the masks are better in the health-care setting to prevent someone who's infected from coughing and sneezing and infecting people in the environment. When you look at what the mask does for the general population, the data are not 100 percent: It doesn't 100 percent protect you from infecting somebody else, and it certainly doesn't 100 percent prevent somebody else from infecting you.

But if you wear a mask, you are getting some protection for yourself, and if you happen to be infected and don't know it, you're to some extent preventing transmission to someone else. Given that, it just makes sense that first of all, the best way to prevent spread is to maintain the physical distance of six feet.

So, if you're in a situation where you're in contact with no one, then you don't have to be walking around with a mask all day, that's for sure. But if you are in a situation where you are going to be within the realm of six feet—the grocery store or even walking out on the street—then wear it.

We have been told something different from our our leadership at JNJ. They have told us that distancing is what is required. In PA we are doing both because it is government mandated. Even with a mask we are to be 6 feet apart. In the lab that works for the most part.
