They Don’t Want Perfect, They Want YOU

They Don’t Want Perfect, They Want YOU

In January I had the pleasure of running our signature “Up Your Speaker Game” workshop with the very talented Kieran Flanagan , and together over 3-days we helped a group of business leaders develop their signature keynote. Seeing the transformation that happened for everyone in the room was truly amazing, and there was one standout learning that everyone commented on.

Today, I want to share that message because it extends beyond the stage and impacts all areas of our lives and business. As one of the participants, Nicky, put it,

“Weaved throughout the entire 3 days was the conversation around dumping perfection, embracing realness and showing up on and off stage as who we really are.”

Because on day 1 when all of the participants showed up and gave us the rough outline of their keynote they were trying to be the perfect version of themselves. Others weren’t even trying to be themselves, they were trying to emulate what they thought made a good speaker. But the truth is, when you step on stage, or show up as a leader in your business, the people watching aren’t looking for perfection. Perfect doesn’t inspire, perfect doesn’t resonate with them, perfect doesn't change the way they view the world. Instead what they want to see is you.

Every part of you.

So how do you allow yourself to show up and own your spotlight? Let’s take a look.

Own Your Brilliance

Take a moment to acknowledge your strengths and accomplishments. Spend a few minutes listing all the things you excel at. Embrace your brilliance and shine a spotlight on yourself. Recognizing your own greatness is the first step towards owning your success.

Embrace Your Journey

Reflect on your life's timeline and the significant events that have shaped you. Consider the choices you've made and the lessons you've learned along the way. Your story is unique and valuable. Embrace it, learn from it, and let it empower you to move forward confidently.

Silence the Doubt

Identify the internal voices that hold you back and challenge their influence. Are these voices helping or hindering your progress? Take control by acknowledging them and asserting your authority. Practice self-compassion and affirm your capabilities. Remind yourself that you're capable and deserving of success.

Live Your Values

Identify your core values and reflect on moments when they were both aligned and misaligned in your life. Aligning your actions with your values leads to fulfilment and authenticity. Consider how you can prioritise your values in your daily life and decision-making. Strive to live and lead in accordance with your true beliefs and principles.

This is how you can start showing up and owning your spotlight each and every day. You can read more about these principles and the 4 Laws of Brilliance in my best-selling book, Be Brilliant - How to lead a life of influence (available at all your usual suspects).

Owning your spotlight is how we begin to make you more visible. This is how we bring you to the world.

Because you deserve to be more than the world’s best-kept secret.

Love this article, Janine. As a ‘recovering’ perfectionist, my biggest lesson when presenting continues to be recognising that I know my stuff and don’t need to be perfect! I heard someone suggest to measure your success by your ability to have fun, connect with and add value to your audience — and that’s something I plan to adopt for future speaking engagements!

Great reminder Janine Garner it’s so refreshing seeing the authenticity in others but it’s often extremely difficult to lose the perfectionist side of our Self.

This article resonates deeply with me—it's incredibly empowering! Vulnerability can feel daunting because it involves exposing parts of ourselves, risking potential judgment or ridicule. A pivotal shift occurred for me when I began accepting myself for who I am and reframed vulnerability as an opportunity to benefit others. By shifting the focus away from my own discomfort and recognising its potential to inspire or help others, the fear becomes more manageable. So now I, as you wisely say, 'Do it scared!' 😂 Love your insights Janine Garner 💡 Thank you!
