DOTB EP 20 - Medical Education on a Sisterly Level

Imagine getting a chance to work and do something meaningful with your best friend all the time. My next two guests – Drs. Gameli Dekayie-Amenu & Chantal Stephens-Archer get to do that on a daily basis with their passion project BestiesMD. Best friends since meeting in college at the University of Chicago, Drs. Chantale & Gameli have used YouTubeblog posts, and public speaking to empower women through health education on a relatable and sisterly level.

Besides being featured in various electronic and print media, they are now jumping into podcasting with their very own – Tea & Cookies Podcast.

Dr. Gameli originally hails from Ghana, but moved to the United States at a very young age. She completed her medical studies and Emergency Medicine residency at Rush University and University of Chicago respectively. Currently she practices as a ER physician in the south suburbs of Illinois.

Dr. Chantale was born and raised in Chicago and went to the prestigious Whitney Young Magnet High School. University of Illinois is where she completed both her medical studies and residency in Internal Medicine. For the past four years, she has been practicing as a Hospitalist.

Things you’ll learn in this episode:

  • How BestiesMD started
  • Their thoughts on the current state of medical journalists
  • Why they favor quality over quantity in the digital age
  • How they’re attempting to level the playing field for underrepresented women in medicine with Medical Mavens.
  • How they answer #imnotjustadoc
