A double threat to be on guard for in the Gulf.

Tropical storm Laura is heading for Puerto Rico this weekend, then will lunge into the gulf early next week as a potential hurricane.

The latest forecast indicates tropical storm Laura in the Florida Straits on Monday morning, then passing near Key West as a hurricane before surging into the Gulf of Mexico.

The latest storm track has Laura making landfall somewhere around Louisiana by the middle of next week.

Residents in this region should monitor the latest forecast from Weatherology. If the storm moves over the Greater Antilles this weekend it will impact the storms track and intensity. Storms lose strength over land and may encounter upper level wind shear in the process. Once back over the water it should strengthen rapidly.

In addition, tropical depression 14 is expected to intensify into Tropical Storm Marco and move into the Gulf of Mexico by Sunday. It could also become a hurricane by the middle of next week as it moves toward Texas and Louisiana.

We predicted an above-average number of storms this year due to unusually warm ocean temperatures and global climate features that reduce high-altitude winds that inhibit hurricane formation.
