Among these alternative fuels, compressed natural gas (CNG) has emerged as a significant contender, promoting itself as a cleaner, more sustainable option compared to traditional gasoline and diesel fuels. Yet, despite its purported benefits, CNG-powered vehicles come laden with many disadvantages that warrant careful consideration by consumers, policymakers, and industry stakeholders. 

1. Limited Refueling Infrastructure

One of the most prominent limitations associated with CNG vehicles is the inadequate refuelling infrastructure available in many regions. Unlike traditional gasoline stations, CNG refuelling stations are relatively sparse, particularly in rural or less densely populated areas. This creates a significant barrier for consumers who may wish to adopt CNG vehicles, as the lack of convenient access to refuelling can lead to range anxiety—a concern that drivers may not reach a refuelling station before depleting their fuel reserves. This issue is particularly acute when comparing CNG vehicles to electric vehicles (EVs), which have seen a rapid expansion of charging infrastructure in recent years. 

2. Vehicle Availability and Selection

While the market for CNG vehicles has grown, it remains limited compared to the breadth of options available for traditional vehicles. Many auto manufacturers offer only a few models fitted with CNG fuel systems, often relegating them to commercial or fleet use. This narrow selection can dissuade potential buyers who seek a vehicle that suits their personal preferences, lifestyle, and aesthetic desires. In addition, the limited availability of CNG vehicles can also affect resale value, as fewer potential buyers may be interested in purchasing a used CNG vehicle. 

3. Performance and Range Limitations

Although CNG vehicles can provide competitive performance, some users report that they do not match the power and torque profiles of gasoline or diesel-powered counterparts. Particularly in heavier vehicles, such as trucks and buses, the performance differentials can be notable. Moreover, the energy density of CNG is approximately 25% less than that of gasoline. Consequently, while CNG vehicles can achieve reasonable ranges, they may require more frequent refuelling. This limitation further exacerbates the concerns surrounding the availability of refuelling stations.

4. Initial Cost and Economic Factors

The initial cost of purchasing a CNG vehicle is typically higher than that of conventional vehicles. While some financial incentives may exist to encourage the adoption of cleaner technologies, the premium price tag associated with CNG vehicles can deter potential buyers. Furthermore, the costs of retrofitting existing vehicles to accommodate CNG engines can be substantial. For fleet operators, these added expenses need to be weighed against the potential long-term savings that may result from lower fuel costs and reduced emissions. 

5. Environmental Concerns

While CNG is marketed as a cleaner alternative to gasoline and diesel, it is not devoid of environmental concerns. The extraction and processing of natural gas can lead to significant ecological disruptions, including water contamination and habitat destruction. Additionally, methane - a potent greenhouse gas - can escape during extraction, transportation, and combustion processes, making it a serious environmental issue. Thus, the environmental advantages of CNG vehicles can be nuanced, as the total lifecycle emissions must be considered. 

6. Technological Challenges and Maintenance

The technology underpinning CNG vehicles differs substantially from that of conventional vehicles, and this shift can introduce challenges in terms of maintenance and repairs. Many mechanics may lack the necessary training and experience to service CNG systems competently, which can lead to higher maintenance costs and longer wait times for repairs. Moreover, the specialized components used in CNG vehicles - such as high-pressure tanks and fuel injection systems - may require more frequent inspections and replacements, thus adding another layer of complexity to vehicle ownership. 

7. Limited Consumer Awareness and Perception

Despite the increasing market presence of CNG vehicles, consumer awareness remains relatively low. Many people may be unaware of the benefits and operational differences associated with CNG vehicles, leading to scepticism and reluctance to embrace this fuel option. The lack of widespread information can hinder the acceptance of CNG as a viable alternative, limiting its growth as a mainstream transportation solution. 

8. Fire Hazards and Explosion

One of the most significant dangers associated with CNG-powered vehicles is the risk of fire. Gasoline and diesel fires can be catastrophic, but natural gas has its own set of complexities. If a CNG vehicle experiences a leak, the methane can ignite in mere seconds when it comes into contact with an ignition source. Due to the high pressure at which CNG is stored, an explosion can occur if a tank is compromised. This potential for high-impact explosions calls for stringent safety protocols, especially in urban areas where accidents may pose greater risks to densely populated communities. 

9. Storage and Refueling Complications

The tanks for storing CNG are built to endure significant pressure, yet they are not immune to failure. External factors, such as collisions or exposure to extreme temperatures, can compromise tank integrity. Furthermore, the refuelling process requires specialised equipment, which can malfunction or be improperly operated. This can result in dangerous leaks during filling. Therefore, training for personnel involved in the maintenance and operation of CNG vehicles is crucial to thwart potential disasters associated with leakage or mishandling.

While compressed natural gas vehicles present certain advantages, including reduced greenhouse gas emissions and lower operational costs, it is essential to consider the myriad disadvantages associated with their adoption.
