The Difference Between “Lease Vs Buy”

For a medical practice that needs state of the art technology, there is a lot to consider. Beyond simply weighing the overall costs of buying or leasing hardware, you also need to consider tax deductions, maintenance, flexibility and more.

When selecting the Apple Hardware you want, you need to consider the pros and cons of leasing versus buying. The cost-benefit of one of the options might outweigh the other.

Leasing Apple Gear

This method is good for a practice that needs to update often, you can get updated technology quickly and easily, for example, if an iPhone comes out yearly it might be a good idea to lease them on a year lease for you and your staff. Getting Apple hardware on an annual basis, allows you to remain competitive, leasing allows you to avoid being stuck with outdated hardware. Ever been to a medical practice with an old PC? It sets an impression on your patients.

Also, another benefit is less expensive up-front costs with leasing, you can get the hardware you need with predictable payments. Your medical practice doesn’t have to deal with one large amount to outright buy what you need. Leasing is great for budgeting and creating a predictable capital expenditure, making it easier to budget for your hardware over a longer period of time.

Leasing is often tax-deductible as an operational expense, but please check with your accountant and tax professional as they can advise you on the best option for your practice. ( I am not an accountant or tax professional. )

Leasing offers many flexible options in terms of timing of the lease to also control monthly expense costs. Also, you aren’t as restricted by high up-front costs and hesitations to try something new that may help your medical practice efficiency.

In leasing, with AppleCare, you don’t pay for maintenance. If something breaks or has issues due to normal wear and tear, most likely it is covered to fix. For example, if an iPad is dropped in the waiting room and the screen cracks, with AppleCare, the iPad will be covered and fixed. Be sure to ask what is covered with AppleCare coverage.

We also at DrChrono lease our Apple gear because of the reasons above.

Buying Apple Gear

A benefit of buying your Apple hardware is that you can alter the hardware, you own the Apple gear, though be cautious it might void your warranty. When buying, you don’t need permission to make changes to hardware. Another benefit of buying is your medical practice has the option to sell the equipment when you are finished with it, allowing you to recover some of the cost.

Buying is a little less complex because you don’t have to deal with a leasing contract. You simply pick out what you need and pay for it. This works great for smaller equipment that doesn’t cost much, like Apple Keyboards, mice, as well as hardware that has a long life.

The downside of buying is you will have a higher upfront initial cost as opposed to lower monthly payments that may be easier to budget for. Paying for all of your Apple gear can be costly all at once. Also, large upfront costs sometimes keep you from buying exactly all of the hardware you need forcing you to by the cheaper lower cost hardware for your practice. Many practices also take out loans to pay for equipment.

Technology is moving fast and becomes outdated quickly, you are stuck with it, you own the hardware. Do you sell it after several years or store it?

Be sure to consider tax deductions and the potential resale value if you buy Apple Gear. Consider how quickly the gear will be outdated and the costs. Each decision regarding hardware buying or leasing should be made carefully to best fit your practice.

Time to remove that old hardware and always be up to date!
