The Dreaded Suggestion Ban.
I love Twitter.
However at times it can be a very frustrating platform to use. Why?
Lack of feedback.
To those of us who are using Twitter as a social media marketing tool; when you start losing followers and/or you stop appearing on #SocialMedia analytics reports; you are in trouble. In some way shape or form you know that on Twitter you have been Banned or Shadow Banned. You can obviously go to help.twitter.com, read all the information available and there is still nothing that really helps. Thanks to a message board I learned about a check that you can run against your Twitter account to verify if there is some sort of ban on your account; like the suggestion ban on my account pictured above.

Now why do these suggestion bans occur? Who knows? No Twitter documentation so it's all really speculation. And that's the problem. If you are paying for Twitter Blue and your 'supplier' suddenly limits your access to the product without a specific reason, should Twitter still be able to charge you full price for the service? Apparently other community members can report your account for supposed violations that results in your account being automatically banned. Is this true? Apparently if your tweets get retweeted by another account too many times in a row your account be put under various levels of bans without any action by you. This is simply wrong. This encourages abuse. The world of B2B Influncers is very competitive. It's very data driven. If as an influencer you get shadow banned and are left off statistical reports your competitors gain an edge and you could lose contracts. If a B2B influencer has a tool at their disposal that can gain them standing and revenue why not use it? If you can open up a throw away account and repeatedly retweet a competitor's tweets until they get suggestion banned; why not?
Twitter needs to patch this weakness asap to preserve the credibility of the platform.
Why am I writing about this issue now? I received my first suggestion ban during the CES 2023 show. Now during MWC23 I was suggestion banned a day before the show. Got out from under it quickly thanks to Twitter support Tuesday night but by Wednesday morning my account was suggestion banned again. The Mobile World Congress trade show ends already on Thursday. These two suggestion bans have prevented me from fully participating and fully benefiting from the event. This is robbing me of an opportunity I will never get back.
To try to find out why this happened to me again; I went back through my notifications and found that an apparent throw away account had retweeted a large number of my tweets in a short period of time. I have no attachment to this account. Why should it affect me? I would like to hear from others out there in the B2B influencer space who have been affected in a similar way. Feel free to reach out either through LinkedIn or direct message me on Twitter. If anyone from Twitter would care to contact me to correct any incorrect assumptions or help me out with protecting my account from future predatory practices it would be greatly appreciated. Perhaps there is something that i am doing that is causing this, but since I have a daily routine that I haven't changed for years, I doubt that is the case. But any word from Twitter would be greatly appreciated.
Creating Something Extraordinary
1yFrom my experience since knowing about the suggestion ban, it seems posting too many links will get your account suggestion banned. They don't like it when you send people off the platform or they see it as spam I suppose. Anyway, it would be nice if Twitter can make things clear as right now it's like we're playing a game where we don't even know the rules. Quite frustrating.
